Rhinos may hire Nigerian

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are likely to hire another Nigerian footballer to beef-up their campaign in the Premier League.

The Rhinos who are currently placed eighth in the league with only four points from as many matches, are banking on a strong defender to help them get back on track.

Nigerian Prince Eboagwa Etuwe, who has caught the eye of Sabah FA head coach, Drago Mamic, is among the top foreign hopefuls presently undergoing trials with the team.

On Monday night, Prince together with other foreign players from Nigeria, Chile, Poland and Morocco played a friendly match against the Korean Police Academy.

Sabah fielded mostly Reserve League, Under-19 and senior players but lost 0-2 in the match played at the Likas Stadium.

Team Manager, Rahman Zakaria said the search for another foreign player is on-going. "We actually have a few candidates who are good but it is all up to the coach (Mamic) to decided who to take."

But as you can see the Nigerian (Prince) has impressed us but we will continue to access all including Chilean midfielder Alain Antonio AS Tudillo Pauez, he pointed out.

"We will make sure that we only sign up the right foreign player for the squad," said Rahman, adding that the FA was hoping to shore up Sabah's defence which has been found wanting.

"Although we played convincingly in all four matches due to our poor defence we let everyone down."

He said this was the reason why Mamic brought striker Salvester Sindeh into the game as a defender as he needed an influential player with the ideal height for the position.

Mamic's cause was not helped by the continued absence of captain Ronny Harun due to international assignments, that left the squad with only local import Ahmad Tharmini Saiban and veteran Burhan Ajui playing in defence.

"What we need now is a commanding central defender who can play well like Ronny," he said, adding, "Prince has the quality that we need in the position but we'll see how things progress."

Should Prince sign up for Sabah, he will be the second Nigerian in the squad after Charles Obi, the current top scorer for Sabah with four goals to his name.

The other foreign import with Sabah is Namibian striker Paulus Shipanga Shitaleni who is however yet to shine.

"Paulus is still in doubt É his performance is below expectation. During friendly matches he plays well but in actual matches he seems to lose his concentration," said Rahman.

Meanwhile, he hoped the fans would turn up in numbers when Sabah play at the Likas Stadium.

"We are not asking for a packed stadium, even half-filled will be good ...

I'm sure the outcome of the game will be different with them cheering the team," he said.

Sabah will next face Kelantan at the Likas Stadium on Friday (Jan 19).

Finally a victory for the Rhinos

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah salvaged lost pride after they outclassed Kuala Muda Naza in their Premier League encounter in Kedah, Tuesday.

The Rhinos now have four points through a win and a draw in four matches they have played thus far in the league. They are now placed eighth among the 11 teams competing in the league.

Currently leading the table is Johor FC with eight points followed by Police with 7, UPB-My Team (7), Kuala Lumpur (7), Armed Forces (7) while Kelantan and Kuala Muda Naza each have four points.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria said beating the clubside 2-1 is a sign that his charges are now more serious in their matches.

"Players displayed excellent improvement especially in their match against Kuala Muda," he said.

He said now that Sabah are regaining their momentum, he hoped their form would hold in every match they play. "I want them to maintain their true colours when playing their other matches in the league," he added.

Rahman said his charges played according to the plan drawn up by coach Drago Mamic in training.

"All the players showed they really deserve to be in the first eleven," he added.

"But whatever it is I hope they will continue giving their best and produce only the best result for Sabah."

In the match, Sabah's goals were scored by Nigerian striker Charles Obi in the 27th and 74th minute. Rahman said if the players keep to form, there should be no problems when they take on Kelantan on Jan 19 at Likas Stadium.

Armed Forces gun down Rhinos

Kota Kinabalu: The Armed Forces latched on to a 1-0 lead to hand Sabah their second consecutive defeat in three matches in the Premier League at Likas last night.

Armed Forces substitute, Alphonsus Micheal Angian tapped the ball in from the edge of the box capitalising on the mistake by defenders, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban and Salvester Sindih to give the visitors the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute.

The game match began with both teams trying hard to find the rhythm with the Armed Forces nearly had drawing first blood off a stinging header from Stanley James Batang.

But, Sabah's goalie, G. Jeevanatham was equal to the challenge as he made a superb reflex save to palm the ball for a fruitless corner for the Armed Forces in the 9th minute.

From then on, the Rhinos dominated the game with Nigerian striker, Charles Obi having the opportunity to put Sabah one up but his soft header went straight to the Armed Forces' custodian Abd Rahman Baba in the 21st minute.

Four minutes later, Sabah again had a chance in front of goal through a free kick from P Rajesh in the right flank but three unmarked forwards, Obi, Bobby Gonzales and Rosdin Wasli were unable to connect to the floating ball that went out to touch.

Close to the breather, Sabah coach, Drago Mamic took out the ineffective Bobby for Chow Chee Wing who immediately changed the game's rhythm. In the injury time of the first half, Chow running at the left flank managed to steal the ball from the Armed Forces defender, Mohd Hazrol Abu Hassan.

He ran towards the touchline before unleashing a powerful low cross but no red shirts were there to meet the ball in the box as Obi and Namibian, Paulus Shitaleni Shipanga already too far in front of goal. After the breather, Henry Soimpon replaced veteran midfielder Zainizam Marjan and his captain armband. Zainizam was deputising for skipper, Ronny Harun who was on national duty.

Sabah's best chance in the second half was in the 68th minute through a one-two between Obi and Shipanga in the middle of the Armed Forces penalty box.

Obi released Shipanga running into the box but his powerful grounder to the left of the Armed Forces goal was palmed away by Abd Rahman for a corner. The ensuing corner saw Obi connecting a powerful shot but again the Armed Forces' custodian was there to stop the ball.

In the 70th minute, the Armed Forces floated a ball into Sabah's box but the defence cannot clear the harmless ball allowing Alphonsus to tap in the ball leaving G. Jeevanatham rooted.

Alphonsus who came in as a substitute in the 35th minute was later substituted by Armed Forces coach, Hassan Razali apparently due to injury.

Shortly after the goal, Mamic made a tactical taking out defender, Salvester and putting in striker, Azrul Ejati Damsah.

Tension boiled up in the 79th minute when the players were involved in a scuffle when former Sabah player, Mafry Balang retaliated to the challenge from Shipanga on the top of the penalty box.

As the players from both teams came close to exchanging blows, coach Mamic rushed to the field with unclear intention. He was later accompanied out of the field by the chasing assistant referee.

In the aftermath, referee, Noor Azman Nordin flashed three yellow cards - one to the Armed Forces goalie, one to Shipanga and another to Obi.

The Rhinos tried hard to level the score during the six minutes injury time but the Armed Forces held on to take their second victory in the Premier League.

Rhinos unhappy over KL defeat

Kota Kinabalu: A defeat against Kuala Lumpur in their second match in the Premier League was not what Sabah had in mind.

The 0-1 defeat at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras on Tuesday has left the Rhinos team manager, Rahman Zakaria a disappointed man.

"This is not the result that we wanted. It should have been a win É winning would have made a good start for the year," he said when contacted in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

"But there is nothing we can do about it. What we can do is concentrate, focus and keep training harder for our next matches," he said.

Rahman said there is still a long way to go but stressed Sabah would have to bounce back quickly "because we can't keep losing points as this would mean losing our fans support as well as our pride."

"We cannot take things lightly although we have played only our second match in the league. I should say now is the best time to start winning and collecting points," he pointed out.

"We have stated earlier that this season we are aiming for a promotion to the Super League É we cannot afford to lose our momentum."

Rahman however said he was delighted to see several of their new signings playing well in the last two matches.

"I think Charles Obi has been doing brilliantly. He scored two goals in the opener and against Kuala Lumpur he created a few scoring chances for his teammates," he said, adding, "this is the spirit and determination that we want in every player."

Chow Chee Wing is also doing well in the team, he said. "He has adapted well with the rest of the players. I would say that Chow and Obi are the most outstanding players during the last two matches."

Rahman said for their next match, he wants to see his chargers win. Sabah will take on Armed Forces on Friday (Jan 5) at the Likas Stadium.

Rhinos not going to be generous with KL tonight

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah will not be in a generous mood when they meet Kuala Lumpur in their first Premier League away match in Cheras Stadium tonight.

Team manager, Rahman Zakaria said Coach Drago Mamic had been sorting out the Rhinos' chink in the armour evident from their first match in Likas when they allowed Selangor PKNS to snatch an injury time equaliser.

"It was just a minor mistake but costly. So we have instructed the players to stay focus until the last whistle," said Rahman when contacted in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

He said Sabah are hoping to garner three full points from each of its match and although most of the meetings between Sabah and Kuala Lumpur ended in a draw last season, the Rhinos would be going all out to ensure victory. "We hope the players would not repeat the same small mistake and instruction has been given for them to play cautiously," he said.

Last week, Sabah had played brilliantly against Selangor PKNS with new hitman, Nigerian, Charles Obi proving a hot commodity when he scored one in each half to build up a 2-0 lead.

The full three points were already in sight for Sabah when the game entered into injury time but just a short lapse of concentration in the Sabah defence saw Selangor PKNS, which had pulled one back earlier scoring to level the score 2-2.

Rahman said Sabah's line-up tonight would be more or less similar with the first match's line-up where Obi is partnered by another new signing, Paul Shitaleni Shipanga from Namibia upfront.
