DESTINY IN THEIR OWN HANDS

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria says their fate in the Malaysia Cup is pretty much in their own hands.

The Rhinos’ team manager says all is not lost for the team insisting that it is them who will decide their destiny in the country’s most prestigious competition despite being held to a one-all draw by Super League leaders Kedah on Saturday.

In the game, striker Charles Obi scored the equaliser 10 minutes from time to cancel out Nelson Sam Martin’s opener for Kedah in the 51st minute.

“Now it is up to us to grab the opportunity,” he said, admitting that a victory over Kedah, who also lead the Group C challenge, could have put them in a better position.

“But securing a point is better than losing, which could have put us in trouble,” he added.

“Now we have a very clear-cut mission,” he said, pointing out that the order of the day will be to win the remaining two matches – home against Pahang and away to Police.

“And if we can do that, we will be assured of a place in the quarter-finals no matter what the outcome of the other matches,” Rahman said.

Sabah are currently lying in third in the six-team Group C, four points behind Kedah, who lead the group on 16 points, while Perak are two points ahead of Sabah in second.

Fourth-placed Police are also still in the race as they are only one point behind Sabah, while it is the end of the road for both Sarawak and Pahang.

If Sabah win their remaining matches it will see them accumulate a total of 18 points.

That will be enough to see them claiming a quarter-final slot via the best two third-placed finishes (teams) at the very least.

“If we continue to fight like what we did in our previous matches, I’m pretty optimistic we will make it into the knockout stage of the tournament,” Rahman said.

“But for the moment, we will take one match at a time. Now we have to focus on our league game against Armed Forces (away) on Tuesday before thinking of our next Malaysia Cup tie against Pahang (home on May 5).

“But we are not the only team that will be on a do-or-die mission in the remaining group fixtures because Kedah, Perak and Police are also in the same situation as us although we have to admit the fact that Kedah are now holding the upper hand.

Rahman also revealed goalkeeper Irwan Jamil could make a quick comeback to first team action following a freak injury against Kedah.

The young goalkeeper was rushed to hospital after he was caught on the head by a late Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zamri challenge after 10 minutes of the match.

“After an initial scan and medical check-up, there is no major injury … he has been cleared to play in the next game but we’ll see about his recovery,” he said.

Sabah next face the Armed Forces in a TM Premier League tie at the MPS Stadium in Selayang tomorrow (May 1).

SABAH, KEDAH SHARE POINTS

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah were forced to share points with visiting Kedah after both sides ended their Malaysia Cup Group C tie in a one-all draw at the Likas Stadium last night.

And with Perak facing a similar fate with both Sabah and Kedah after being held to a two-all draw by Pahang in Kuantan and Police notching a 4-3 victory over Sarawak at the MPS Stadium in Selayang, the race for the two quarterfinal slots from the group are still wide open for the top four teams.

Kedah remain on top of the six-team standings on 16 points followed by Perak 14, Sabah 12 and Police 11.

Sabah had the worst possible start when its keeper Irwan Jamil was stretchered out barely after 10 minutes of play.

The young custodian was forced to make way for another youngster Harold John, as he was rushed to the hospital after a clash with Kedah flanker Mohd Khyril Muhymeen Zamri, and he seemed to have suffered a head injury.

However, team manager Rahman Zakaria when contacted said that there was nothing to worry about by declaring that Irwan, who turns 20 on July 29, should make it for the Rhinos’ next game away to Armed Forces on Tuesday.

“It was a bad clash, but after a check, there was nothing serious. He had a swollen forehead, and will recover in time for our next match,” said Rahman.

Despite that, Sabah had the better first half and could have taken the lead through its striker-in-chief Charles Obi in the 23rd minute.

It started from the hardworking Salvester Sindeh who managed to outrun a Kedah defender before he squared the ball for Zainizam Marjan who then dummied for Obi. Unfortunately, the Kedah keeper Mohd Helmi Eliza was in his element to palm away Obi’s close range effort.

Towards the end of the first half, Salvester saw his attempt go wide before Harold blocked Marlon Alex James’ effort in a one-on-one situation.

But Nelson Sam Martin silenced the about 5,000 Rhinos’ fans when he struck the opener seven minutes after the break.

The Chilean midfielder unleashed a knee-high shot from inside the box during a goalmouth melee, defeating the inexperienced 22-year-old Harold.

In the 61st minute, Obi squandered the opportunity to put Sabah on level terms when his close-range effort went wide.

With 11 minutes remaining into regulation time, Sabah were awarded an indirect free-kick after the match official caught Kedah custodian kicking the ball outside the penalty box.

Chow Chee Wing made the simplest of tasks by tapping the ball for Obi to unleash a powerful grounder that deflected off a Kedah player’s leg before it went into the back of the net.

After the equaliser, Sabah tried hard to find the winner. However, it was Kedah who had the better chance and could have restored their lead in the 84th minute, but it was fortunate for Sabah as Marlon failed to connect V. Thirumurugan’s superb cross from the right.

Sabah’s next Malaysia Cup tie is up against Pahang at home on May 5 before concluding their group challenge by taking on Police in an away battle on May 26.

VICTORY CRUCIAL

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos’ boss Datuk Anifah Aman has urged the fans to batter it out together with the team when Sabah take on Kedah in an expected explosive Malaysia Cup Group C clash at the Likas Stadium tonight.

He said the team certainly needs the much-needed support from the fans to humble the high-riding Super League table toppers. “On behalf of the team, the team management and the players, I would like to appeal for an all-out support from the fans. We need to raise the volume and help our team,” said Anifah, who is also the FA of Malaysia Vice President.

“We need to win the tie at all costs in order to brighten our prospect of making it into the quarterfinals stage,” he added. “This really is a big game for us. It means absolutely everything and our destiny is in our own hands. “When you look at the standings, you can see how tight it is to claim the two quarterfinals slots (from the group). Even to make it among the best two third-placed teams would be tough. So obviously we need nothing less than a victory to put us in a good position. Besides that Anifah said this is the Rhinos’ biggest game thus far this season.

“This is not only a do-or-die battle for us, but it is also our biggest game so far in the season. Here we are not only up against the Group C leaders, but are facing a team that currently leads the Super League standings.

“They are one of the most consistent teams in the M-League, and this is going to be a tough, tough one for the boys. But I am glad to note that our team too has been doing pretty well, and I really hope they will rise to the occasion tomorrow,” said Anifah. Anifah added that Kedah’s unbeaten run in the competition would provide an added motivation for the players to aim for victory. With two matches left to play after tonight’s clash, the race for the two automatic quarterfinal slots is still wide open for the top three teams in the group. Kedah will go into the battle as the group leaders on 15 points, followed by Perak and Sabah with 13 and 11 points respectively.

However, even fourth and fifth placed Police and Sarawak, who are on eight and seven points respectively, both have a mathematical chance of progressing through.

On Sabah’s chances, Anifah said: “I’m not going to make any predictions, but the players know they have a job to do, and they also know a draw is not good enough for the team either.”

Kedah may have their deadly striker in Marlon Alex James to count on, but Anifah said their Nigerian striker Charles Obi is no less impressive than Marlon. “I’m happy with what he (Obi) has done thus far, and I want him to maintain the hard work and continue with his scoring feat. “But then again, this is not just about Obi … it is about one team. So it is important for the team to click together. For the clash, Sabah will be at full strength and they will surely rely on the Nigerian Obi and his countryman Prince Ativie Guy to do the damage on the visitors. Salvester Sindeh could also feature for the team following his impressive performances of late. Newly appointed Rosdin Wasli would start with youngster Radzi Hussin in midfield along with Chow Chee Wing and another youngster Zulamri Muhammad. At the backline, the ever-reliable Ahmad Tharmini Saiban will have the support from the lanky Nigerian defender Prince Eboagwu Etuwe, Ronny Harun and P. Rajes. Rhinos’ chief coach Drago Mamic could also start S. Sunder or new signing from Melaka Telekom, Munir Amran at the backline, while youngster Irwan Jamil will remain as the number one ball stopper. For the record, in the first round, Sabah held Kedah to a one-all draw in front of the packed Darul Aman Stadium.

Rhinos aim to upset Kedah

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are ready to make amends for their loss to Sarawak last weekend when they host group leaders Kedah in a Malaysia Cup match on Saturday at the Likas Stadium.

Fresh from their 2-0 win over Kuala Lumpur in the Premier League on Tuesday, the Rhinos will want to restore their unbeaten streak as well as stay in contention for a Malaysia Cup quarter-final berth.

Third in Group C with 11 points, Sabah can be expected to field their best players against Kedah, who are also the Super League leaders. Perak are in second place with 13 points while PDRM, Sarawak and Pahang are in fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectively.

Kedah go into the match as favourites and with top-scorer Marlon Alex James expected to lead the attack, Sabah may well be in for a tough match.

James has scored 12 goals in the Super League and another six goals in the Malaysia Cup thus, he will definitely be a marked man on Saturday. Sabah also have their star in Charles Obi but coach Drago Mamic will have a tough decision in choosing Obi's partner in attack.

Sylvester Sindih, the second half-substitute who scored Sabah's first goal against Kuala Lumpur may get the nod ahead of Nigerian Prince Ijiebor Ativie who missed a couple of good chances against the City Boys.

It was the lanky Sylvester who scored in the one-all draw against Kedah in the first round encounter at Alor Setar.

Alternatively, Mamic may include both players in the match with Sylvester operating from midfield and Ativie partnering Obi. Hard-tackling Rosdin Wasli, speedy winger Chow Chee Wing and Radzi Hussein or Julamri Muhamad are expected to complete the midfield department.

Marshalling the defence are likely to be international Ronny Harun and Nigerian Prince Eboagwu Etuew together with P. Rajes and Ahmad Tharmini Saiban.

In goal would be Irwan Jamil, the young goalkeeper who is improving in confidence with each game he plays, thanks to the coaching experience of former state and national goalie Khairul Azman Mohammad.

Sabah's probable line-up: Irwan Jamil (GK); Ronny Harun, Prince Eboagwu Etuew, P.Rajes, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Sylvester Sindih (or Julamri Mohd.), Rosdin Wasli, Chow Chee Wing, Mohd. Radzi Hussein, Charles Obi, Prince Ijiebor Ativie.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

KOTA KINABALU: The fight for the two promotion slots will go down to the wire. That’s what the Rhinos’ team manager Rahman Zakaria believes.

“Everything is likely to be decided on the final League match in July,” he said.

“The current top five or six teams are still pretty much in the race for promotion to the Super League next season. And teams that show consistency will likely go through.

“Undoubtedly Police and UPB-MyTEAM have the edge, but with seven or eight matches left to play, anything can happen. So now it is important for us to keep our winning momentum going.

“The League is coming in thick and fast, and there is little room for error. From now on we have to show some consistency if we want to finish among the top two teams at the end of the season,” Rahman said.

“The fixtures are pretty tight, and we have to be ready and be prepared at all times. It is not a good excuse for us to have a ‘yo-yo’ performance. What we need now is consistency. If we can do that, I am sure we will be there when the League is over,” Rahman added.

But Rahman is delighted to note that the team has shown some consistency in the League.

For the record, the victory over Kuala Lumpur saw Sabah extend their unbeaten run to nine matches. Their last defeat (in the League) was the 1-0 loss to Armed Forces at home in January.

The win also helped them surge closer to a promotion slot.

The three points gained from the tie at the Likas Stadium on Tuesday has helped them close the gap with the top two teams – from 10 points at the start of the second round to a mere five points.

Police took over the top spot from previous leaders UPB-MyTEAM after snatching a 3-1 victory over Shahzan Muda.

They occupy the top spot with 25 points followed by UPB-MyTEAM on 24 while Sabah stay in third with 20 points followed by PKNS also on 20 points, but Sabah has a better goal average to stay ahead of them.

On the Rhinos’ performance against Kuala Lumpur, Rahman said that he was satisfied with the team’s overall performance.

“I am happy not only with the result, but also how we played the game. The players showed tremendous fighting spirit, commitment and dedication.

In fact Rahman said the victory is just the right tonic for the team ahead of the crucial clash against Kedah at the Likas Stadium on Saturday.

“When you look at the standings (Malaysia Cup), all matches will be a do-or-die affair. And it’s not only us, but for Kedah as well as Perak and Police too.

None of these teams, including us, can afford any defeat, as it can slash the chances of claiming the two automatic slots to the quarter-finals.

“So we need to rebound following our loss to Sarawak. I believe the players are ready to put our challenge back on the right track (in the Malaysia Cup),” said Rahman.

Sabah is also in the hunt for the FA Cup crown as they are now among the quarter-finalists with Perlis to beat in order to make it into the last four.

In the match against Kuala Lumpur, second half substitute Salvester Sindeh drew first blood for the Rhinos before Charles Obi scored the second in the 77th minute.

SABAH IN THIRD SPOT

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah climbed a rung up to third after scoring a 2-0 win over Kuala Lumpur in a Premier League challenge.

Substitute Salvester Sindeh and striker-in-chief Charles Obi scored for Sabah after the break following a goalless first half.

It took Salvester five minutes to break the deadlock after coming in for Radzi Hussin in the 52nd minute by slamming home the opener from inside the penalty box.

Salvester chested Chow Chee Wing’s cross from the right before unleashing a powerful drive that defeated Kuala Lumpur goalkeeper Saiful Amar Sudar.

Then it was Obi’s turn to put his name on the score-sheet with a cleverly taken shot from outside the box that defeated Saiful for the second time in the 77th minute.

Salvester could have netted his second in the 79th minute, but this time, his close-range attempt off a pass from Obi was blocked by the keeper.

Inside the last 10 minutes of the game, Sabah had three good chances to extend their lead but attempts from Obi, Prince Ativie Guy and P. Rajes failed to find the net.

Earlier in the first half, there was not much action, with Sabah looking the better side among. In fact the home side started off aggressively and could have taken the lead as early as in the first minute through Prince Ativie.

After a nice one-two with Obi, Prince Ativie unleashed a shot from just outside the box, but Saiful was alert enough to block his attempt.

Later in the half, Prince Ativie saw his weak overhead kick saved by Saiful, while Obi’s close-range attempt was blocked by the keeper.

Kuala Lumpur’s only attempt in the half was through its only import player, Lamey Kevin Andre, whose 30-metre free-kick was well read by Sabah’s young custodian Irwan Jamil.

Meanwhile, in another Premier League tie, Police defeated Shahzan Muda 3-1 at the MPS Stadium in Selayang to go top of the standings.

They toppled UPB-MyTEAM, who did not see action last night.

Police sit on top of the standings with 25 points and have a game in hand over UPB-MyTEAM, who dropped to second on 24 points followed by Sabah in third on 20 points.

PKNS, who edged Johor PG 1-0 at the Dato Hassan Yunus Stadium in Larkin, are level on 20 points but Sabah stay ahead of them on better goal average.

The other matches of the night saw KL Plus edge Armed Forces 2-1 at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras, while Kelantan were held to a scoreless draw by Kuala Muda Naza at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru.

Rhinos going for full points against KL

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah host Kuala Lumpur at the Likas Stadium on Tuesday and a win would boost their chances of a top three finish in the Premier League.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria said the team are not affected by their recent 2-3 defeat to Sarawak in the Malaysia Cup and was confident his charges will put up a good fight and go for a win against Kuala Lumpur.

Kuala Lumpur narrowly beat Sabah 1 - 0 in their league's first round encounter and they would definitely would want to repeat that victory on Tuesday.

Both teams go into the match fully aware that they cannot afford to lose as Sabah, currently in fifth position with 17 points, are only a point behind Kuala Lumpur who are third with 18.

Kuala Lumpur on the other hand are gunning for a win to consolidate their position as well as to keep up with league leaders UPB-MyTeam FC and second placed PDRM.

Rahman also said that he is expecting coach Drago Mamic to make minimal changes in the line up for the match. Midfielders Radzi Hussein and Chow Chee Wing, who both scored in Kuching are expected to keep their places in the starting line-up and Charles Obi is also expected to partner compatriot Prince Ijiebor Ativie in attack.

Obi, who has scored nine goals in the league so far, will be aiming to add to his tally and Rahman is confident the Nigerian can deliver the goals. At the back, national defender Ronny Harun is expected to partner another Nigerian Prince Eboagwu Etuew in defence to keep Kuala Lumpur at bay.

He called for the fans to come to the stadium wearing red shirts and not to miss the match that is expected to be an explosive encounter.

On the match against Sarawak, he said Sabah were unlucky as they were capable of winning but the players failed to capitalise on the chances they had in front of goal.

He congratulated Sarawak for taking their chances well but said that the defeat will serve as a wake-up call to the team to improve their performances overall.

Sabah's probable line-up against Kuala Lumpur: Irwan Jamil (GK); Ronny Harun, Chow Chee Wing, S.Sunder, Charles Obi, Ijebor Prince Guy Ativie, Prince Eboagwu Etuew, Rosdin Wasli, Mohd. Tharmini Saiban, P.Rajes, Mohd. Radzi Hussein.

TOUGH ENCOUNTER

KOTA KINABALU: Charles Obi insists he does not fear any team in the Premier League. “I don’t fear any team,” the Rhinos striker-in-chief insisted ahead of their clash against Kuala Lumpur at the Likas Stadium tonight.

“If you go into a game fearing a team then you may as well don’t play. I am never scared of any team … it is only a 90-minute affair. It is my principle or policy that you need to be confident whenever you go to the battlefield with the heart that you are going to win the game,” said the Nigerian. On the Kuala Lumpur date Obi said: “It is a very important game for us to win. They won 1-0 in the first round so we will not take them for granted. We must do our best to get the three points.”

Obi, who is currently the League’s leading scorer with nine goals to his credit thus far, also believes they have the quality to claim one of the two promotion slots to the Super League next season.

“We have had a slow start to the season, but we have a fantastic spirit and fantastic quality of late, and if this goes on, I am very sure we will be up there at the end of the season.

“We are enjoying our football and we have a big belief in ourselves. Hopefully we can continue playing the way we are and pick up the points along the way. On his partnership with countryman Prince Ativie, Obi said that since he (Ativie) arrived there has been improvement in the attack. “I can understand him so it is quite easy for me to play alongside him,” he said. He also called on the fans to come in full force to support the team tonight.

“From now on every game will be a do-or-die mission for the team, and it would be a great help if more fans come and support us. Obi’s other countryman Prince Eboagwu Etuwe, a defender, also shared Obi’s sentiment regarding the Rhinos’ chances at their promotion quest. Eboagwu said: “As long as we can stay focused and give our fullest concentration in all our games, I think to finish among the top two is still pretty much within our reach.”

Commenting on the team’s strength, Eboagwu said that the team strength lies in the attack.

“I think our attack has been pretty good. We have been scoring goals, and the strikers have been doing really well, especially Obi.” To another question, he could not point out the team’s weaknesses, and said: “I don’t see any weak point in the team if everyone is giving their best. If we play our hearts out, we will be a good side. And that is what we have been doing all this while. Everyone is giving their best and spirit, determination as well as commitment is also pretty high in the team. Eboagwu also said that he finds Sabah a wonderful place to stay. “The fans have been good while the coach and the team management have been great and it is my hope to see more fans coming and supporting us especially when we play our home matches,” he said.

Meanwhile team manager Rahman Zakaria wants the Rhinos to get the three points from the match. He said: “We are now already in the second round and we certainly could not afford to slip points away especially in our home matches.” “This will be a tough match as like us, Kuala Lumpur are also still in contention for promotion. “They are coming here with high spirit following their victory over Selangor in the Malaysia Cup challenge on Saturday. “So we better be prepared and give the best we can in the game,” said Rahman.

Sabah are currently joint fourth with PKNS with 17 points in the standings, but played one match lesser than League leaders UPB-MyTEAM, who sit on top of the 11-team standings on 24 points. As for Kuala Lumpur they are one point ahead in third, but have played one match more than Sabah and PKNS. Police are in second on 22 points. And with UPB-MyTEAM not playing tonight, a win for Sabah could help close the gap with the leaders.

RHINOS STILL IN CONTENTION

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Malaysia Cup challenge took a slight knock after succumbing to a 2-3 defeat to Sarawak in a Borneo derby clash at the Sarawak Stadium on Saturday.

But it is not the end of the road for the Rhinos as they are pretty much still in contention for a place in the last eight.

There are three matches left to play in the preliminary round stages, with Sabah playing two of those games at home.

Winning the two home games would certainly put them through into the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament

However, the Rhinos will not have an easy ride as they would have to face leaders Kedah and Pahang (at home), before concluding their group campaign up against Police in an away battle.

Even team manager Rahman Zakaria remains optimistic about the Rhinos’ chances of making it into the next round despite the defeat to Sarawak that saw them being pipped from the second spot by Perak who scored a 3-1 victory over Police in another Group C challenge.

“I think we are still very much in the race, but nothing will be easy from now, not only for us but for the rest of the teams in the group. So now we must realise how important our next two matches against Kedah and Pahang are.

“We have no other choice but to win those two matches in order to make it through,” said Rahman.

On the defeat to Sarawak, Rahman said: “I’m disappointed because we could have at least settled for a draw, but then again this is football. When you look at the game, I think we looked the better side, but in football it is all about scoring.”

“We had our chances and so did Sarawak. But I really hope the players will learn something from this defeat and that they must play to their best ability no matter who our opponents are.

“I want them to take this as a lesson and hope in the future it will not happen again. I also want them to take this defeat positively and put up a better show in our coming matches be it the Malaysia Cup, FA Cup or League,” Rahman said.

Kedah stay on top of the standings on 15 points, followed by Perak on 13 while Sabah are two points behind in third.

Fourth placed Police, who picked up eight points after seven games are also still in contention, while Sarawak have also revived their slim chances after picking up seven points thus far.

In the Borneo derby clash, Sarawak took the lead through Khairulzal Azmi’s 25th minute goal, and Sabah had the chance to put things on level terms, but unfortunately Prince Ativie Guy saw his spot kick saved by the Sarawak custodian.

However, Radzi Hussin finally managed to score the equaliser for Sabah in the 36th minute, but Mohd Shahrol Sabree restored Sarawak’s lead three minutes before the first-half break.

Chow Chee Wing put Sabah on level terms again when he struck the second goal for the Rhinos seven minutes after the break.

However, it only took Sarawak two minutes to restore the lead through Romeo Kambo’s penalty kick.

Sabah’s next game is up against Kedah at the Likas Stadium on Saturday, but before that they would take on Kuala Lumpur in a Premier League challenge at the same venue on Tuesday (tomorrow).

ALL GUNS BLAZING

KOTA KINABALU: It will be all guns blazing as Sabah aim for full points when they take on lowly Sarawak in a Malaysia Cup Group C tie at the Sarawak Stadium tonight.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria said they are not taking any chances despite the fact that Sarawak are languishing at the bottom of the standings. “We know they are not doing really well be it in the Malaysia Cup or the Super League, but that is not a good reason for us to take them lightly. “This is a team that can spoil our night, so we have to be ready. Like any other team, we respect Sarawak.

“Furthermore, when you look at their previous two matches, they have been doing quite well. They held Kedah to a two-all draw in an away battle and also managed to hold Selangor to a one-all draw in their last home match.

“So when you take this into account, this (tonight) will not be an easy night for us especially in this derby clash, which has always been closely contested affairs. Nevertheless, Rahman said they will be going for the three points and nothing less.

“We cannot get carried away by what we have done thus far because we haven’t achieved anything yet. “There are another four matches left in the group stages (including tonight) so anything can still happen. We must take this opportunity and go for the three points as it could help us edge closer into booking a place in the last eight,” he added. Rahman also said that they will surely field their best players for tonight’s clash.

“We will be having a full squad for the clash, and I’m quite certain the coach (Drago Mamic) will field his best players,” said Rahman. For the record, Sabah are currently lying second in the six-team standings on 11 points, one behind leaders Kedah.

Perak are third with 10 points, followed by Police with eight. Sarawak and Pahang are level on four points and occupy the fifth and sixth placings respectively.

Rhinos target top three finish

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah are aiming for a top three finish in the league and judging by Tuesday's 2-1 away win over league leaders UPB-MyTeam FC, they may just get to do it.

The Rhinos' hard-fought win proved that their earlier 3-1 win over the same side at Likas in the first round was no fluke. It was in Likas that UPB-MyTeam FC's eight game winning streak came to an end, gored by the Rhinos.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria said he was buoyed by the fact that the young players could rise to the occasion adding that Sabah had fielded six players under the age of 21 against UPB-MyTeam FC.

The six were goalkeeper Irwan Jamil, midfielders Mohd. Radzi Hussin, Julamri Mohammad, Hardy Parsi, Azrul Ejati and defender P.Rajes.

Radzi scored Sabah's first goal against UPB-MyTeam FC with a stunning freekick in the 23rd minute while the winner came from the impressive Nigerian import Prince Ijiebor Ative in the 90th. Croatian Marin Mikac scored for the home side.

Rahman said the score could have been bigger if the striking duo of Charles Obi and Ative had taken their chances but nevertheless the manager was happy with the overall performance of the team.

He also saluted the 200-odd Sabahans working at the Klang Valley for their support on Tuesday saying their presence boosted the team's spirit.

The combination of the young and old by coach Drago Mamic gave Sabah a fresh new look, with the youngsters adding flair and energy while the old anchored the team with experience, he said.

On promotion to the Super League, he said Sabah had a realistic chance but so do the other teams in the Premier League, adding that the team will concentrate on winning and not be bothered by the rankings.

" The important thing is that the players maintain the team's good run and play well," he said. Sabah are currently fourth in the Premier League with 17 points from four wins, five draws and two losses. They trail league leaders UPB-MyTeam FC by seven points with nine matches to go.

Sabah are also in contention for the Malaysia Cup as well as the FA Cup.

Sabah will travel to Kuching this weekend where they face bottom side Sarawak in a Malaysia Cup match.

WELL BALANCED SIDE

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah took another giant step towards their promotion bid as they moved within seven points of the leaders UPB-MyTEAM with a game in hand following their 2-1 victory over the latter at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday.

Prince Ativie Guy was the hero of the night for the Rhinos after netting a last gasp winner. Earlier on, nippy midfielder Radzi Hussin thrust the Rhinos in the lead in the 23rd minute with a superbly taken free-kick from about 40 metres before Marin Mikac equalised for UPB-MyTEAM, when he struck the equaliser in the 63rd minute.

The victory, which was their second over the leaders and fourth of the season, saw Sabah sharing 17 points with Selangor PKNS and also saw both teams sharing the fourth spot as both have scored and conceded the same number of goals.

MyTeam still lead the standings on 24 points, two points ahead of second placed Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) with 22 points but has the advantage of having played two games less.

Kuala Lumpur, Sabah’s next opponent in the league, is in fourth on 18 points.

“I am satisfied with our overall performances. I thought we were clearly the better side throughout the game. It was unfortunate that we did not end the match with a bigger score line,” said Rahman Zakaria.

“We dominated the game without giving them much space. In fact we created enough chances to win the game comfortably, but poor finishing denied us. However, as the old saying goes ‘its better late than never’,” the Rhinos team manager added.

“I think Prince (Ativie) squandered at least five or six chances, but in the end I am delighted to see that he finally made amends.

“It’s not only good for the team, but also for him, because we certainly want to see him score more goals for the team.

“As for Obi (Charles), like the rest of the players, he too played well, and I think he had one scoring opportunity earlier in the game, but he fluffed his chance.

“Having said all this, I am not at all concerned with the missed chances, because I firmly believe that this team will keep on scoring be it from Obi, Prince, or other players.

“For them, it is not important who finds the net, as they all know what is far more important is that the team wins in the end,” said Rahman.

On another positive note, Rahman said that it is nice to see that several youngsters have started to blend well with the senior players.

“I think we have a well balanced side here. The seniors and the young players are playing together really well. For the record, in the UPB-MyTEAM match, we had six under-21 players in the team.

“Four of them, Radzi, goalkeeper Irwan (Jamil), Zulamri Muhammad and P. Rajes, all started the game while Hardy Charles and Azrul Ejati Damsah also tasted action in the second half.

“This is good for the team in the long run, and the coach (Drago Mamic) has done a good job in grooming these players.

At the same time, Rahman also thanked the 200-odd fans that turned up for the UPB-MyTEAM game.

RHINOS FIRED UP FOR UPB-MyTEAM CLASH

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos are eyeing a double over UPB-MyTEAM when they meet in the second round of their Premier League challenge at the Shah Alam Stadium tonight.

Rahman Zakaria said they are all fired up to take on the table-toppers, insisting that victory is within reach.

In the first round, the Rhinos shocked the leaders for their first defeat of the season by chalking up a convincing 3-1 victory at the Likas Stadium late last month.

And the Rhinos team manager is optimistic of repeating their feat over the club side.

Despite the Rhinos playing at the opponent’s den, Rahman isn’t a worried man.

“It doesn’t matter whether it is at home or away, we are ready for the battle. We know it is going to be a tough battle, but we will go down to the battle field with only victory in mind,” said Rahman.

“We know where we stand and furthermore we need to show some kind of consistency if we want to do well, not only in the League but other competitions such as in the Malaysia Cup and the FA Cup.

“We will certainly be going all out. The players are ready and I think all of them are pretty much in high spirit. Determination and commitment among the players are also high, and I don’t see any reason why we should slip points away in this match,” Rahman said.

“So obviously we are all pretty optimistic about our chances, and hopefully everything will go our way tomorrow.

On a positive note, Rahman said that they will be having a full squad for the clash including striker-in-chief, Charles Obi, who will surely and certainly spearhead the Rhinos in attack.

He added that Prince Ativie Guy will also be around, including the rest of the players in the like of Rosdin Wasli, Chow Chee Wing, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Prince Eboagwu Etuwe, S. Sunder and Ronny Harun to name a few.

For the record, UPB-MyTEAM is currently leading the pack in the 11-team standings with 24 points to show, 10 points ahead of sixth placed Sabah, who have a game in hand.

A victory over UPB-MyTEAM will certainly help improve their position in the standings.

RIGHT MOMENTUM

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria reckons the Rhinos have finally found their true strength.

He also declares that they are now ready to take on their opponents … be it at home or away.

The Rhinos’ team manager said that this was based on their previous results where they have not only been getting the points, but the way the team have been playing has been pretty convincing.

“If this is the way we play or if we can maintain this kind of performance and try to rectify one or two loop holes along the way, I’m pretty sure we will go far in any of the tournaments.

“I’m so delighted and proud to see that the team are getting better and better in each game and the players certainly deserve a pat on the back.

“However, they have to realise that our journey is still a long way to go and that they shouldn’t get carried away with what they have done or achieved thus far.

“As long as they play to the way they have been playing, I’m sure they will be rewarded at the end of the day. But firstly the hard work, unity in the team, team spirit, and determination must be maintained,” Rahman added.

He also believes that Sabah are on the right track in claiming one of the two quarter-final slots in the Malaysia Cup Group C challenge.

“The one point that we earned from the Perak game … I think has helped us gain a slight upper hand over our opponents. When you look at the standings, everything is now in our court. It is up to us to grab our chances because no matter what the other teams (in the group) are doing, we will still be there (quarter-finals) if we maintain our fine momentum,” said Rahman.

On Saturday, Sabah held Perak to a one-all draw at the Perak Stadium that saw Charles Obi netting the equaliser for Sabah in the 68th minute from the spot after Keita Mandjou had put Perak in front by slotting home the opener one minute before the break.

“It was an equally contested match, but at the end, I thought one point could be a fair result for both teams, although both teams had enough chances to take the game.

“We had our chances, so did Perak, but all our players played well … I think our keeper Irwan Jamil was the most outstanding among them all. He made numerous saves, including a sure goal from Khalid Jamil,” said Rahman.

“He is still young and I’m delighted to note that he managed to cope with the game even with the presence of more than 10,000 Perak fans,” said Rahman, referring to the Rhinos’ rookie custodian who turns 20 years old on July 29.

Irwan was named as the Rhinos’ number one custodian following G. Jeevanatham’s suspension for some poor performances.

Sabah’s next Malaysia Cup match is up against Sarawak in an away battle on April 21.

But before that they have a tricky tie against league leaders UPB-MyTEAM in a Premier League challenge on Tuesday.

CRUCIAL AWAY TIES FOR RHINOS

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria insists the Rhinos have their own “class” and that they are ready for the challenges ahead as they embark on three crucial away battles starting with a date with Perak in the Malaysia Cup second round opener at the Perak Stadium tonight.

After the Perak clash, the Rhinos will switch their focus by taking on league leaders UPB-MyTEAM in a Premier League tie on April 17, before playing a derby match against Sarawak in the Malaysia Cup challenge on April 21.

“All these three matches are very important and difficult ones, especially the first two,” the Rhinos’ team manager said. “Nevertheless, we will try our best to gain something out of it. We must make sure that we do not slip any points away. Although we have to do it away from home, but I firmly believe that this is not an impossible mission to accomplish,” said Rahman as he eyes victory over their opponents.

“Perak are one of the best teams in the Super League, but we’re in a class of our own. We managed to beat them in the first leg (1-0 at the Likas Stadium). We have also shown that our level is not far away from them. Personally, I would say that we have a team that is ready to take on, not only Perak but the rest of the other teams as well.

“What is important is for us to keep on with the good work. It is also important for us to stick to our normal game. “I’m happy to note that the team is in their best condition for the battles and our aim is to get the maximum points. “We are doing quite well in the Malaysia Cup and are now moving up the Premier League table after a poor start. We are also in the FA Cup quarter-finals, so obviously we have every reason to be confident.

“We need as many points in all the competitions to ensure we will be up there among the top teams,” said Rahman. In the Malaysia Cup, Sabah currently occupy the second spot after the completion of the first round with 10 points in the bag … a mere one point behind leaders Kedah.

However, third-placed Perak are only one point behind Sabah while Police, who sit in fourth spot, are two points adrift. And with Kedah taking on lowly Sarawak and Police taking on bottom of the table Pahang, Sabah cannot afford any slip-ups. Meanwhile in the Premier League, Sabah are trying to pick up the points after enduring a poor start to the season.

The Rhinos have found their rhythm in the 11-team league recently and had since moved up to fifth place on 14 points and trail leaders UPB-MyTeam who have 24 points.

Rahman said that after the Perak game, they will be staying put in the national capital and would return home after the UPB-MyTEAM game before taking on the road again to face Sarawak.

After the Sarawak clash, Sabah will play two consecutive home fixtures – against Kuala Lumpur (Premier League – April 24) and Kedah (Malaysia Cup – April 28).

The squad, led by Rahman, left for Perak yesterday with all its keys players making the trip.

ON A ROLL – Rhinos extend unbeaten run

KOTA KINABALU: Friday’s victory over second-placed Police could well be the Rhinos’ revival in their quest for promotion next season as they surged from the eighth spot to fifth in the 11-team standings.

In fact the Rhinos have been pretty consistent in the League as they have extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

However, as statistic shows, their only problem is that they find it difficult to win a League game! But their performances in the Malaysia Cup as well as the FA Cup suggests otherwise.

But after two convincing victories in their last two games over the top two teams in the League, it clearly indicates that the Rhinos are bent on winning more games. Prior to this victory, Sabah also defeated table toppers UPB-MyTEAM with a similar score line, 3-1.

Rahman Zakaria insisted that the Rhinos are almost at their peak. “This team will get better,” he said. “The way things are going, we are moving in the right direction and it is important for us to keep it that way.

“We shouldn’t be carried away. There will be no easy matches from now on, but I firmly believe that the players are ready for the challenges ahead.”

Rahman added while stressing the importance of the team in maintaining a winning momentum. “From now every point will be crucial in our quest for promotion. But I’m happy to see that the players have started to realize that they have a mission to accomplish,” said Rahman.

For the record, Sabah is not only eyeing promotion, they are still in the race for the Malaysia Cup and the FA Cup.

Rahman is also delighted to note that the players have started to merge as a team.

“I think this has been the strength of the team. The bond among and between the players have been great. Unity in the team is also excellent and they have shown on the battlefield how they supported and motivated each other.

Commenting on Charles Obi, Rahman said: “He has been fantastic for the team.”

“We should be glad that we have him on our side because if we are up against him, he will be a handful to handle.

“He’s got the height, pace, strength and two good feet which are ideal for a top striker and I’m not surprised that he has been scoring regularly.

“I hope he can continue with this scoring spree and lead Sabah’s charge in all the competitions that we are in,” he added.

However, Rahman is quick to point out that this is not a one-man team.

“Obi has been doing great, but in all fairness, the rest of the players have also done their part. As I have said earlier, this squad is all about team effort and with a player like Obi in the team he will make us even stronger.

The Nigerian striker is now a hit among the Rhinos fans. He is the team’s leading scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.

The lanky Obi, who signed for Sabah at the start of the season, has proven beyond doubt his ability on the field. And what is more special about him is that he not only finds the net but creates scoring opportunities for his team-mates. Sooner rather than later, his partnership with countryman Prince Ativie Guy could be the deadliest ever seen in the Premier League.

He is now the Premier League’s leading scorer with nine goals. He also scored three goals apiece in the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup competition.

Once again, Rahman hopes that fans will come in full force in drumming up support for the team.

“We are getting the right results with some impressive displays, and I really foresee a steady increase in crowd turn-up for our home games ahead. We really need the presence of the fans to further uplift the spirit of the team,” Rahman said.

In the match against Police, Sabah were forced to fight from a goal down before slotting three goals after B. Rajinikandh had put Police in front in the 58th minute with a well-drilled free-kick.

Second-half substitute Salvester Sindeh equalised for Sabah after only six minutes on the field when he came on for Zulamri Muhammad. He slotted home Obi’s past from close range.

It was Obi’s turn next when he netted his first in the 75th minute before adding the second five minutes from regulation time.

UPB-MyTEAM remain unshakeable at the top of the standings with 24 points, five ahead of Police, but the Cops have a two-match advantage.

PKNS is in third on 17 followed by Kelantan in fourth on 16. Sabah is in fifth with 14 points to show.

Sabah’s next fixture is an away tie to Perak in a Malaysia Cup challenge on April 14 followed by another away match in the Premier League clash against UPB-MyTEAM on April 17.

RHINOS KNOCK DOWN COPS

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah gained sweet revenge over Police as they kick started their Premier League second round campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory last night.

Striker-in-chief Charles Obi was again the toast of the team as he netted twice after second-half substitute Salvester Sindeh had put Sabah on level terms following a B. Rajanikadhn opener.

It was again a night to cheer at the Likas Stadium as the Rhinos put up yet another solid and spirited performance that eventually helped them avenge their 1-2 defeat to the same side in a Malaysia Cup challenge last month.

And the well-deserved victory would surely instill greater spirit among the Rhinos as after last night’s victory the Rhinos defeated the top two sides in the league. Late last month, they scored a victory over table-toppers UPB-MyTEAM with a similar scoreline and followed it with this sweet victory over second-placed Police. It was not much action in the first half as both sides took some time to settle down with Police having the first chance at Sabah’s goalmouth when P.Sivanathan unleashed a pile-driver shot from about 35 metres, but Sabah’s young custodian Irwan Jamil managed to palm the ball away for a corner. Sabah’s first chance in the half only came in the 20th minute when Radzi Hussin shot wide after receiving a back-pass from Obi. But it could have been 1-0 for Sabah in the 34th minute when Chow Chee Wing was presented with a sitter.

Obi managed to feed the unmarked Chow, but unfortunately his attempt from five yards out went wide. Two minutes later, this time it was P. Rajes who squandered another golden opportunity when his point-blank header sailed above the crossbar. Late in the first half, Police’s Hillary Echesa saw his attempt from outside the Sabah goalmouth go wide. Both teams enjoyed a longer half-time break, as there was a blackout at the Likas Stadium. It was about a 15-minute delay before the game resumed.

And it was Police who stunned the homesters when B. Rajanikadhn curled his 58th minute free-that hit the back of the Sabah net. Trailing by a goal, Sabah coach Drago Mamic took a gamble by bringing in his third striker in Salvester Sindeh.

And it proved to work well for the Rhinos as Salvester cancelled off B. Rajanikadhn’s opener with a low drive after receiving a pass from Obi in the 69th minute, six minutes after replacing Zulamri Muhammad.

Five minutes later, Obi finally sent the about 4,000 home fans into frenzy when he slotted home Sabah’s second. It started from a lobbed ball from Chow from the centre of the half. The Rhinos’ leading scorer chested the ball before unleashing a low drive into the back of the Police net. In the 80th minute, B. Rajanikadhn could have put Police on level terms when they earned a free-kick from the same place as they did when he put his side into the lead.

But this time luck seemed to shy away from him as his attempt hit the woodwork. In the 85th minute, Obi sealed the Rhinos’ victory with a fine finish after receiving a long pass from Rajes. From then on it was all Sabah until the final whistle.

REVENGE MISSION

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria declares that the Rhinos are more than ready to face Police in the opener of the second round in the Premier League challenge at the Likas Stadium tonight.

In fact he added that the team cannot wait to take on their opponents.

“No doubt they are a good side, and we respect them for that. However, it doesn’t mean that we are going to give them an easy ride.

“We have nothing to fear. Furthermore, we have extra reason to get the better of them,” the Rhinos’ team manager said, referring to their 1-2 defeat to Police in the Malaysia Cup challenge in the middle of last month.

For the record, that was the Rhinos’ only defeat in the competition that would resume with the second round on April 14 where Sabah will be taking on Perak in an away battle.

“We are also aware of their strength and I firmly believe that we have the quality to get the better of them this time around.

“It is the same case for the players. They are pretty much in the mood, and I can see that team spirit is high.

“I would like to stress it here that we are ready and confident, not only for this match, but for the remaining of our second round fixtures.

“The team have done well in training and they have proven that in the match proper. We can see that they are getting better and better with each match.

“But then again, there is no point of talking and playing a good game, as what matters most for the team now is winning the battle.

“We have a bunch of fighters in the team and I’m confident we will be up there as the league progresses.

“I would also like to make a humble call to all the fans to come and support the team. Let’s help and support the team. They certainly need the fans’ support and I really hope for a good turn out tomorrow,” said Rahman.

He also declares that they will be at full strength for the clash with striker-in-chief Charles Obi and his new striking partner Prince Ativie certainly starting the game.

For the record, Sabah are currently lying eighth in the 11-team standings on 11 points, eight behind second-placed Police, who played one match less than the Rhinos.

SABAH TAKE ON PERLIS

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been drawn to take on Perlis in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup competition. The draw that was conducted yesterday saw Sabah playing hosts for the first leg tie on May 15.

The return leg has been slated for May 29. Sabah marched into the last eight after defeating Johor FC 4-3 in the second round while Perlis earned their berth following the disqualification of Melaka Telekom.

For the record, Melaka Telekom defeated Perlis 2-0 in the last 16, but was penalised for fielding an ineligible player in the clash.

Commenting on the draw, the Rhinos team manager Rahman Zakaria said: “We have nothing to worry. In fact we are ready to face any team, including Perlis.”

“They may be a Super League side, but I firmly believe that we have a good side here that is ready for anyone,” he added.

And Rahman has every reason for being confident, while on their way to the quarter-finals they dumped two Super League giants.

In the first round, they defeated Melaka 2-1 before their victory over Johor FC.

And another interesting factor is that the Rhinos have not lost to any Super League side this season. As in the Malaysia Cup, they have also registered victory over a few more Super League sides such as Perak, Pahang and Sarawak and held Kedah to a 1-1 draw in an away battle.

The other quarter-finals will see Kedah taking on Premier League leaders UPB-MyTEAM, Johor PG will meet Kuala Muda Naza while Selangor clash head-on with PKNS.

RHINOS FIRED UP

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos are all fired up to maintain their winning touch when they take on Shahzan Muda in a Premier League tie at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan tonight.

In fact it will be a tricky trip for the Drago Mamic boys as they need nothing less than three points to keep their promotion quest intact.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria admitted that it will be another tough assignment for the team.

“In fact from now on, every match will be tough because we just cannot afford to lose any more points.

“We are playing catch up here, so obviously there is no room for error.

“I’m happy to see that the spirit in the team is high and the players are pretty much in the mood for more wins.

“They all indicated that they want to end this first round campaign with a win,” said Rahman.

Tonight will be the final first round match for the Premier League, but Sabah still have one game in hand that is against Police, which has been postponed to May 8.

“We are ready to fight and will give a good challenge to all our opponents,” Rahman said, referring to their promotion quest.

“I think we have a good team here and we are ready for Shahzan Muda. Furthermore, we have been doing pretty well lately, and there is surely no turning back for the boys.

But having said that, Rahman said they will certainly not underestimate their opponents.

“Be it the top teams, the bottom teams or from the Super League, we will treat them the same … we will play to the best of our capabilities or abilities.

“But there is no point of talking too much, because what matters most is what happens on the field. But I firmly believe that this team has all the strength and quality to go far, and Insyak Allah we will return home with all three points,” Rahman said.

Rahman has all the reason to be in such a confident mood as the Rhinos have not lost a Premier League game since January 9.

Despite their five-match unbeaten streak thus far, the Rhinos have been struggling to find their winning momentum until the victory over UPB-MyTEAM.

“I really hope this will be our springboard to achieve more wins in the Premier League. We have done pretty well in the Malaysia Cup as well as the FA Cup, but we also need to do well in the league, and it’s good to see that the players realise this,” Rahman added.

Rahman also said that all their best players are available for the clash, including striker-in-chief Charles Obi and newly-signed Prince Ativie Guy, who has been pretty impressive thus far.

Sabah are currently seventh in the 11-team standings on 10 points. As for Shahzan Muda, they occupy the fourth spot on 12 points.

A victory for the Rhinos would help them leap frog Shahzan Muda or even third-placed Selangor PKNS, should the club side fail to collect any point in their clash against KL Plus FC.

For the record, UPB-MyTEAM lead the standings on 20 points, followed closely by Police in second with 19.

SABAH’S PROBABLE LINE UP: Irwan Jamil, Harold John, Prince Eboagwa Etuwe, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Ronny Harun, Burhan Ajui, Rezuan Mohd Radzi, Hardy Charles Parsi, S. Sunder, P. Rajes, Henry Soimpon, Rosdin Wasli, Radzi Hussin, Chow Chee Wing, Charles Obi, Prince Ativie Guy, Azrul Ejati Damsah.

RELIEF FOR RHINOS

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos have been told to maintain their winning momentum as they kept alive their promotion quest with a crucial 3-1 victory over Premier League leaders UPB-MyTEAM on Friday.

The victory comes as a great relief for the Drago Mamic boys as anything less than maximum points could have shattered their dreams.

It is also good to see that the fighting Rhinos have now moved out from the relegation zone as the three points earned from the clash helped them climb three rungs up from 10th placing to seventh in the 11-team standings on 10 points.

Prior to the clash, the Rhinos’ ability as a genuine contender for promotion was in serious doubt, no thanks to their inability to win in their Premier League challenge.

In fact it was their first home win in the league after five attempts. Their previous four outings ended in three draws and one defeat.

Sabah chalked up their first win (in the league) by edging Kuala Muda Naza 2-1 in an away battle. Their remaining two away fixtures ended in a draw and a defeat.

But what is more promising in the victory (over UPB-MyTEAM) was the partnership of Nigerian striker Charles Obi and his countryman Prince Ativie Guy.

In fact it was Prince Ativie’s second game for the team since replacing Poland striker Arkadiusz Jerzy Zarlzynski. He scored his first goal for the Rhinos (in the 4-3 win over Johor FC in the FA Cup) and made two assists.

And it was from his assist that Obi netted the Rhinos’ second against UPB-MyTEAM before sending a superb cross for Obi to head home the third goal.

Chow Chee Wing drew first blood for the Rhinos with a well-taken free kick in the first half injury time before Obi extended the lead five minutes after the break.

But UPB-MyTEAM were back in the game when Prince Eboagwu Etuwe scored an own goal in the 54th minute. But three minutes from time, Obi headed in a Prince Ativie cross to seal the Rhinos’ well-deserved victory.

Although it was team effort that won the game for the team on Friday, but both Obi and Prince Ativie will certainly be an asset for the team if they can improve their partnership in matches to come.

Rahman Zakaria insists that the team will only get better.

“They are all fighters in the team. All of them want to prove that they are among the contenders, not only in the Malaysia Cup or the FA Cup, but also in the league.

“They want to prove that they are up for the challenge, and the victory over UPB-MyTEAM was just one example about their burning desire to do well in the M-League,” the Rhinos’ team manager said.

“As I have said all along, we have a good team here. Our only problem was that we just could not win a league game since our victory over Kuala Muda Naza in January.

“So I hope this will be our springboard to achieve greater results in our coming matches,” Rahman said.

“It is important for the team to maintain their winning momentum or rhythm. If we can do that, I think we have nothing to fear,” Rahman said.

“In fact we are very proud of the players, especially the determination and spirit they have shown in our last two games.

The Rhinos, who have a game in hand, are just three points behind third placed Selangor PKNS (13 points) while UPB still top the league on 20 points followed by Police on 17.

“I hope the players will not be carried away with their new found confidence but maintain their focus in every match,” said Rahman.

Rahman also hoped that the victory over UPB would lure more fans in their upcoming home matches.

“To have a big crowd cheering the players will be of great help and if not crucial for the team to vie for victories.

“On behalf of the team I would like to express a big thank you to the fans, who have been supporting us all this while and hopefully we will see more turn up in the near future,” added Rahman.

Sabah’s next match will be against Shahzan Muda in a TM Premier League tie at the Darul Makmur Stadium, Kuantan on April 3, before playing their first second round match against Police at the Likas Stadium on April 6.
