Tall order for Rhinos

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Lawrence Gimbang insists there is no substitution to victory as he wants the Rhinos to lure the fans back to the Likas Stadium by winning matches!

At the same time, the Sabah FA acting president also gave the Rhinos a tall order by wanting them to end their title drought when the new season kicks off next month.

Speaking at a gathering cum dinner with the players held at a local hotel here on Saturday, Gimbang also stressed on the importance of discipline among the players.

He said: “This is your career and you must realise that this is your bread and butter.”

“You have to be disciplined yourselves be it on or off the field. You may not realise it, but fans are watching you.

“You have to gain respect not only for yourself, but also for the team,” Gimbang added.

Gimbang also admitted that nowadays, sponsors are not easy to come by and therefore insisted that the players must keep on winning matches with the hope of bringing the fans back to the Likas Stadium.

“If the team cannot win matches, how do we expect the sponsors to come in when we are playing in an almost empty stadium?

“If we can win matches the fans will come and it would be easier for us to convince the sponsors to come in,” he said.

“On our part, we have high hopes the team will deliver because it has been long enough since we last won any trophy. This time around, we believe we have a good team … a team that can deliver. With no foreign players, it is a blessing in disguise for us because this is our opportunity to show that we are capable of handling the challenge even without foreign players,” Gimbang added.

He also reminded the Rhinos to stay away from match-fixing.

“You cannot fool people all the time. You can run but you cannot hide. So my advice is for all of you to stay away from it (match-fixing),” said Gimbang.

The Rhinos’ team manager Rahman Zakaria concurred with Gimbang, by saying that the team management will not tolerate anyone involved with match-fixing.

He said they will be holding seminars with the Anti Corruption Agency and the Police together with the players.

At the same time, they would also bring in lawyers to have a talk with the players to brief them on the Contract Act.

Like Gimbang, Rahman also wants the team to play their hearts out and end their title drought.

“I have been holding the post for almost three or four seasons, and I have not won anything yet with the team, and hopefully this new season, we will win something,” said Rahman.

At the same time, Rahman also thanked the Sabah FA management for giving him the chance to lead the team.

“It is a heavy responsibility, but for the love of the sport, I’m willing to sacrifice my time and contribute to the State. I will do the best I can in leading the team to success,” Rahman pledged.

During the function, Rahman together with head coach Wathiq Naji, assistant coaches Mohd Asyraaf Fung Abdullah and Burhan Ajui, goalkeeper coach Awal Taham as well as the team’s physiotherapist Matlan Basir, also signed their appointment letters.

Youth and Sports Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Penyuki Matta, Sports Board General Manager Mahmud Kalung, Sabah Sports Council Director Abdul Rahman Laman and Sabah FA Executive Secretary Harry Baking were also present at the function.

For the new season, the Sabah FA has named a 24-member squad, namely Irwan Jamil, Harold John, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Mohd Fariss Azlan Mat Isa, Gasili Pangalot, Hardy Charles Parsi, Mafry Balang, Henry Parsi, Clarrey Tabad, Mohd June Azral Lalah, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Wong Sai Kong, Rosdin Wasli, Zulamri Muhammad, Awang Norizan Ensim, Billyton Vun Ket Ming, Rezuan Khan Aman, Mohd Farid Saibun, Alto Jinus, Zainizam Marjan, Hamidin Amat, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Leopard Alphonso and Selyvister Saini.

Bobby joins KL Plus!

DPMM FC'S worst fears have been confirmed — there will be no Malaysian Super League (MSL) football for them next season.

The team manager, Pg Waslimin PSJ Momin also confirmed the departure of Malaysians Chan Wing Hoong to MSL team Perlis and Bobby Gonzales to MPL outfit KL Plus FC.

It was reported last week that the governing body for football in the country, the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (Bafa) — along with 54 other youth, welfare and sports associations — was suspended in late November for not complying with Registar of Societies (RoS) rules.

This means that the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) currently does not recognise Bafa as a member, and thus, DPMM cannot compete in any Fifa sanctioned competitions.

More than a friendly

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos have been told to show their true colours when they take on Keningau Mixed (a combination of MU FC and Fokus Niaga FC) in a friendly at the Keningau Stadium tonight.

“We made this effort to bring them to Keningau not just for a friendly game,” said Fokus Niaga FC team manager Nik Nadzri on behalf of the organiser yesterday.

“Most importantly we want them to show an example to our youngsters in Keningau and its surrounding areas like Tenom and Tambunan so that it could help instill the spirit of wanting to contribute to the State and in this case football.

“We also hope that this friendly would help educate our youngsters to be more professional in the game.

“We also believe that this could help create greater interest among the people to be more active in the sport.

“Besides that it would also enable the people in Keningau to see for themselves the team that would spearhead the State’s challenge in the upcoming new season.

“In line with that, it is our hope to see the State team giving their best in the game and showing off what they are capable of,” Nik Nadzri added.

On the friendly, he said that it is a joint-effort made by Fokus Niaga FC and MU FC, who is managed by Ramadin Mohd Yassin.

Nik Nadzri said that there will be no big names in the Keningau Mixed.

“With the exception of Ronnie Edward and Faisal, the rest of the players are all local talents,” said Nik Nadzri.

Both Ronnie and Faisal are former Reserve League players.

Keningau Mixed will surely get their wish granted as Rhinos’ team manager Rahman Zakaria insisted that they will not take the game lightly.

He said that they would certainly parade their best first 11 for the game.

“We will try our best not to disappoint the Keningau fans. Furthermore we also want to take this opportunity to promote the State team.

“What we want in this game is quality and we expect the team to give their maximum best.

“We will try to show to the people of Keningau that we are a Premier League outfit, and despite this being just a friendly game, we will treat this match as important as any other match,” Rahman pointed out.

Rahman then predicts that this is going to be an exciting game. “I hope the fans will not miss this opportunity. We hope that after they know what their team is capable off, they will not hesitate to give their support to the team when we play a home game in Likas during our Premier League challenge.”

Alto Linus looks set to make his first appearance in the Rhinos’ colours in front of his home fans. The Keningau-born striker is likely to start in the Rhinos’ attack together with former international Zainizam Marjan or new signing from Kinabatangan Hamidin Amat.

Azrul Ejati Damsah and Mohd Farid Saibun are the other options in attack.

Another Keningau lad, Harold John is also likely to see action. However, first choice custodian Irwan Jamil is the likely choice to start the game with Harold likely to come in, in the second half.

In midfield, the Rhinos’ head coach Wathiq Naji has to pick between Wong Sai Kong, Rezuan Aman Khan, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Billyton Vun Ket Ming, Awang Norizan Ensim, Leopold Alphonso, Selyvister Saini and Clarrey Tabad to form his four-man engine room.

In the backline, Gasili Pengalot, Mohd Fariss, Mafry Balang and Hardy Charles Parsi are his likely choice, with Mohd June Azral Lalah and Henry Parsi starting from the bench.

Zulamri Muhammad and Rosdin Wasli are the only two Rhinos that will not feature in the game. Zulamri is nursing a hamstring injury while Rosdin is recuperating from a knee operation.

For tonight’s clash that kicks off at 7.30pm, the organiser is charging a minimal entry fee of RM5.

Still in the race

KOTA KINABALU: The State men’s futsal squad are pretty much still in the race for a place in the final round of the National Felda Futsal Championship 2008-09 after ending their first round campaign with one win, and two draws held in Terengganu last week.

The feat sees them lying in second spot in the four-team Group F standings on five points, a mere two points behind table-toppers Kedah, who registered two wins and a draw.

Third-placed Terengganu are only three points behind Sabah after drawing two matches and losing once. Johor MBJB languish at the bottom of the table on one point from a draw.

“At the moment, it is pretty much an open race,” player-cum-coach Austin Orou said.

“As long as we can maintain the way we have been playing, I’m quite optimistic about our chances,” he added.

“In fact it has been a good first round for the team. For instance against Kedah, we created so many chances only to be denied by poor finishing. Overall, I think we created at least 10 chances, but only one found the net.

“As for Kedah, they scored from the spot kick following a collective error by the team, and that was their only chance. But I have no complaints because our players tried their best and fought their hearts out through the tournament.

“Basically, now we need to fine tune the team, especially in our attacking as well as our defending. If we can improve on that, I think we will put up a much better show in the second round,” Austin said.

The second round of the tournament will be held in Johor Baru from January 9 to 11, 2008 and Sabah must finish top of the group to qualify for the final round which will be held in Perak from January 16-18.

In the first round, Sabah were held to a one-all draw by Kedah despite dominating the game. Eddie Mansur scored for Sabah.

Eddie then scored a hat-trick in the 7-2 victory over Johor MBJB with Mohd Faisal Ismail and Mohd Marwansitah Ahmad netting two goals each.

In the four-all draw against Terengganu, this time it was Mohd Marwansitah Ahmad who scored a hat-trick while Eddie netted once.

RM10,000 awaits the group winners while the champions of the tournament will pocket RM40,000, and the runners-up RM20,000.

Vun Ket Ming hoping it will be third time lucky

KOTA KINABALU: Billyton Vun Ket Ming hopes this will be “third time lucky” as he joins the State team for the third time in his career, hoping, that this time he can win honours in the M-League.

After two failed attempts, he said that it will only spur him on to strive and work harder.

His personal quest is to help the team win (at least) one silverware at the end of the 2009 season.

“I will try to play my role to the best of my abilities and help the team win at least one title this new season,” Billyton said in an interview with the New Sabah Times Sports yesterday.

“I’m at the twilight of my career, and it would be great to win something with the team you love.

“At my age, I’m grateful to be given this opportunity and I will not want to waste the opportunity,” he added.

Billyton made his debut with the State team way back in 1995 with the Reserve League squad and played for the Under-21 squad (now being switched to Under-20 tournament) until 1997.

But it was only seven years later when he made it into the senior side. He played for the senior Rhinos from 2004 to 2006.

Billyton, who is a Prisons Officer DX 17, says that he doesn’t have the same feeling as he had a few years back. At the age of 31, he is the oldest player in the squad, with the youngest being Leopold Alfonso, 17.

“I might be the oldest but I can contribute like the rest of the players to the team. In fact I’m pretty much young at heart,” he jokingly said.

He went on to say that he can play competitive football for another two to three years, barring any injury.

Commenting on Sabah’s newly appointed head coach Wathiq Naji, Billyton said: “He is an experienced man and I firmly believe that he can guide us far in the competition. His coaching is simple and easier to understand, and I believe the players like the way he conducts his coaching.”

“And most importantly he knows how to lift the morale and spirit of the team and I firmly believe that this is the key to the team’s success.

“With two good assistants (Mohd Asyraaf and Burhan Ajui) I think we have a good blend of coaching here.

After almost a month of training, Billyton insists the team can compete in the Premier League.

“I don’t see any reasons why we cannot compete. Even though senior players left the team we still have some experienced players around such as Wong (Sai Kong) Zainizam Marjan and Rosdin Wasli.

“At the same time we also have the likes of Gasili (Pengalot), Mafry Balang and Mohd Fariss, who are no less experience having had featuring in the M-League for the last four to six years.

“We also have so many talented youngsters in the squad who are willing to learn and improve. Youngsters such as Alto (Linus), Leopold as well as Sylvester Saini and Mohd Salawi to name a few were excellent in training.

“I can see that they have bright future in the game provided that they are willing to sacrifice and improve.

“They must stay humble and try to learn every day. As long as they have the right attitude they are the future of the Sabah team. Billyton also expressed his sincere thanks to his superior for giving him the chance to play for them.

“I wish to say a big thank you to all of them for giving me the chance to contribute to the State. I really appreciate their kindness for releasing me. On my part I will try my best not to disappoint them,” said Billyton.

Among those Billyton wish to thank are: State Prison Director Tuan Jamaludin Bin Saad; PKP Suria Hj Idris; TPP Hamdan Salleh; TPP Jamian Arim and TPP Jaikol Gubal.

“These are the people who are being supportive towards my involvement with the State team,” he added.

At the same time, Billyton also thanked the Sabah FA for giving him the chance to don the State colours once again!

To the fans, Billyton said: “I hope they will give this team a chance to prove themselves. My humble call is for them to rally behind the team, and not just to come to the stadium to go against our very own players.”

Rhinos look promising despite exodus

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos, under new head coach Wathiq Naji, look promising despite having almost all of their first-team players leave the team for greener pastures elsewhere.

And interestingly this time around, the team will be spearheaded by an almost all-local side for the new season scheduled to kick off on January 9.
With the exception of Wong Sai Kong, who is into his second season with the team, and new boy Mohd Fariss, the rest are all local players.

Over the weekend the Rhinos proved that there is still “life” after the exodus of players at the end of last season.

Playing against two Super League outfits – DPMM Brunei and Pahang in the Datuk M Saravanan Challenge Trophy in Labuan, the Rhinos showed they can compete with the best.

In the tournament Sabah defeated eventual winners DPMM Brunei 1-0 in the opener before losing by an identical scoreline to Pahang in the second match.

“I’m satisfied with their overall performances,” Rahman Zakaria commented.

“Against Pahang, it was a 50-50 affair.

“They scored the goal following a freak incident where a clearance by Gasili (Pengalot) hit the referee. The ball fell right in front of a Pahang player,” he said, referring to Azamuddin Akil’s strike, who curled the ball past the hapless Sabah’s third choice goalkeeper Mohd Salawi Jasad.

“This is football and anything can happen. But if not for that I think the outcome of the game could have been different,” Rahman added.

DPMM Brunei went on to lift the trophy plus RM5,000 prize money after edging Pahang 2-1 in their final game on Sunday.

All three teams were level on three points, but at the end of the day, Brunei were awarded the challenge trophy.

“Our purpose to Labuan was to gain match fitness and we achieved it.

“I’m happy to see that they played quite well as a team, but most importantly, the players played their hearts out and showed that were so determined and committed to win the game.

“They tried really hard, and I hope they will maintain this attitude be it in training or in the league.

“On the night they showed what they are capable of. Their strength as well as their weaknesses also prevailed and now we just need to rectify their weaknesses and fine tune the team.

“We are almost there,” said Rahman as far as their readiness for the new season is concerned.

So now, Rahman said it is important for the players to keep working hard in training in order for the team to be ready for the new season.

And Rahman believes there is certainly light at the end of the tunnel provided that the players are willing to strive for success.

Furthermore he added that they have an experienced coach to guide them all the way.

“While on the field we have a good blend of players who are willing to fight for the team, on the sidelines, we also have a blend of experienced and talented officials, who I believe can guide the team to success.

“For instance, our new head coach (Wathiq) is a very experienced man while his two assistants (Mohd Asyraaf and Burhan Ajui) are rookie coaches. With three heads together, I’m pretty sure the team will benefit,” said Rahman.

Slim win for Rhinos

KOTA KINABALU: The slim win over Brunei in the Datuk M. Saravanan Challenge Trophy in Labuan on Friday clearly shows that there is still life for the Rhinos after the exodus of players at the end of last season.

It was not really about the victory over the Super League outfit that matters on the night, but the way the new-look Rhinos took the game was pretty much surprising and encouraging.

Not many would have expected them to perform the way they did as they showed a glimpse of their strength and weaknesses, which would impress many.

Despite having only six of the last year’s squad starting the game with former international striker Zainizam Marjan skippering the team, the Rhinos showed they are not pushovers.

In fact they could have scored a couple more goals with a little more luck.

Azrul Ejati Damsah missed twice from close range, while Wong Sai Kong had his spectacular freekick from 25 metres saved by the keeper.

And at the end of the day, a solitary strike from rookie striker Alto Linus was enough for them to settle the score with Brunei.

The Keningau youngster leaped high to head home a Mohd Radzi Hussin corner four minutes before the break.

With this kind of commitment, determination, and team spirit, one would presume that this team can only move forward.

The Rhinos fought their hearts out throughout the game and most importantly their teamwork was so encouraging that given a chance and time this team can be a formidable side.

However, this is only just the beginning for the team, as the season has not even started yet!

It is important for them to realise that there is certainly no place for the comfort zone as hard work, dedication, commitment and willingness to improve individually or as a team are the crucial ingredients for this young squad to achieve success.

“It is good to see them win, but then again this is just our first competitive game and we cannot judge them based on this game alone.

“There is still plenty of room for improvement, and as long as they are willing to sacrifice, keep working hard from now, I’m sure we will be a better team sooner rather than later,” said Rahman Zakaria.

“I hope they will take it from here and continue working hard and fighting for the team,” the Rhinos’ team manager added.

Besides Zainizam, Wong, and Azrul, the other familiar faces in the first team were Mohd Radzi Hussin, Hardy Charles Parsi and goalkeeper Irwan Jamil.

New faces Gasili Pangalot, Mohd Fariss, Billyton Vun Ket Ming, Mafry and Alto Linus completed the Rhinos’ start list.

Leopold Alponsus, Awang Norizam Ensim, and Mohd June Azral Lalah also made second half appearances coming in for Azrul, Radzi and Zainizam respectively.

For the record, the tournament is being organised by My Event Management and Services with Labuan Ferry Corporation Sdn Bhd being the main sponsor. Papar Member of Parliament Datuk Rosnah Shirlin was there to grace the opening match.

THE RHINOS UNUSED SUBS: Harold John, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Zulamri Muhammad, Clarrey Tabad.

Cops give Salvester ultimatum

KOTA KINABALU: Salvester Sindeh will not be playing for Sabah after all after being given an ultimatum by his employer – the Royal Police of Malaysia.

He was told “play for us or resign” as his attempt to play for his birth state Sabah for the third consecutive season evaporated!

The latest twist has left Sabah with a lightweight attacking department as former international Zainizam Marjan is the only experienced front man left in the team.

The other two are both rookies namely Alto Linus and Hamidin Amat as another striker, Zaykiel Leong seems to have turned down the offer to play for his own state team.

Speaking to the New Sabah Times Sport yesterday, Salvester said he was disappointed after being told by his employer about their decision.

“The Police Sports Council conveyed the decision to me yesterday and there is not much I can do now. As much as I want to play for the State, but I cannot go against their wishes because they are my employer,” a dejected Salvester said.

Salvester also hinted that he may not feature in the M-League for the new season after refusing to move his base from the Sabah capital to the national capital.

“I have explained my problems to them, and I hope they understand my situation,” said Salvester.

On the other hand, Sabah FA is not giving up hope of getting Salvetser’s services just yet.

“I’ll be going to Kuala Lumpur next week for a meeting and I will take this opportunity to talk to them (Police),” said Harry Baking.

The FA Executive Secretary said that they will try their best to get their man before launching their hunt for another striker should their attempt to get Salvester fail.

“Salvester has been with us for the last two seasons, and he is one of our key players. It will be a great loss to lose a dedicated and committed player like him,” Harry admitted.

Sabah are running out of time in getting a replacement for Salvester as the M-League is scheduled to kick off on January 9, 2009 where Sabah are set to play their first match of the season away to Kuala Lumpur.

First competitive test for new-look Rhinos

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos will be put to their first test when they compete in the Datuk Saravanan Challenge trophy starting in Labuan tonight.

It will be interesting to see how they will fare after losing almost all their first team players for the new season.

Their true strength and weaknesses will prevail in this tournament organised by My Event Management Services and participated by two Super League outfits DPMM Brunei and Pahang.

This will be the Rhinos’ first competitive assignment under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Wathiq Naji.

“After losing so many players at the end of last season it is like starting all over again for us, but the management is not too worried because we know this team can only move forward.

“It is a mixed blend of experienced and young players and as long as they are willing to work hard and fight for the team, which I know they will, I think we will be ready for the challenge,” said Rahman Zakaria.

“I believe the current players are not here just for the money, but they are those who are not only willing to fight for the team, but have the pride to play for the state of Sabah,” the Rhinos’ team manager added.

Those regulars who have left the team are Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Mohd Nafuzi Zain, Hishamuddin Othman, Zuraindey Jumai, Chow Chee Wing, Bobby Gonzalez, Mohd Munir Amran, and Eddie Gapil.

Teams in the M-League will not have the services of foreign players after the FA of Malaysia decided to do away with the imports, where last time out each team was allowed to sign three players.

On the Labuan trip, Rahman said this will be a good opportunity for the team to test their true capability as they will be taking on Super League outfits.

“This will be a good preparation for us because we will be facing good opponents and it will certainly benefit the team.

“After this it will give us a clearer picture on where we stand and we will try to rectify our weaknesses.

“It will also give us the opportunity to find the right combination of players for the first team or the top 16.

“I hope the players will take this opportunity to prove to the coach they deserve a place in the first team.

“I also want to remind the players the importance of playing as a team. We don’t want any star players, because we firmly believe team work is one of the crucial ingredients towards achieving success,” said Rahman.

Rahman said they are almost there as far as their readiness for the new season is concerned.

“I think the players are ready and from the aspect of fitness, I think we need another 20 to 30 per cent to go.

“After this tournament I think we are going to play one or two more friendly matches and by then the team should be ready for the new season,” he said.

Wathiq has named an 18-member squad for the trip, and out of the 18, only half are from last year’s squad including three young goalkeepers – Irwan Jamil, Harold John and Mohd Salawi Jasad.

The other six are defender Hardy Charles Parsi, midfielders Mohd Radzi Hussin, Wong Sai Kong and Zulamri Muhammad and strikers Salvester Sindeh and Zainizam Marjan.

Former Bukit Jalil-based midfielder Leopold George, who is the latest player to be roped in by the Sabah FA, is also among those being included for the trip alongside another rookie striker from Keningau Alto Jinus, who is only 22 years old.

Another two new faces making the trip are midfielder Awang Norizan Ensim and former Kuala Muda Naza defender Mohd Fariss Mat Isa.

Defenders Gasili Pengalot, Mohd June Azral Lalah, Clarrey Tabad and Mafry Balang, who are all ex-Rhinos that are making a comeback into the State team, are also making the trip.

Rosdin Wasli, who is recuperating from a knee operation, is among those left behind for the trip.

There was also no place for last season’s squad’s players – Henry Parsi, Azrul Ejati Damsah and Mohd Farid Saibun while the new faces that are not in the 18-man squad are Hamidin Amat, Selyvister Saini and Rezuan Aman Khan.

Sabah will face two Super League outfits DPMM Brunei and Pahang.

They take on Brunei in the opener tonight before playing Pahang the following day.

Wathiq takes charge

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA officially appointed Wathiq Naji Jassim as its new head coach yesterday.

His selection comes as no surprise as the 68-year-old former Iraqi midfielder has been seen with the team for almost two weeks or so.

The FA also named Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah and Burhan Ajui as assistant coaches, while Awal Taham is the goalkeeper coach to make it a foreign-local combination.

“The puzzle has been completed with the appointment of the coaches,” Rahman Zakaria said.

“It is a good blend, and it is great to have someone of Wathiq’s calibre on board. He has experience playing and coaching at a multitude of levels. His record speaks for itself,” Rahman added.

“He will bring fresh philosophy to this team, and since he is also Asian, it would be easier for him to understand our culture and I’m sure the players can adapt well to his system.

Wathiq has an abundance of experience, having coached the Iraq national side as well as some of the top clubs in Asia.

“The team management believes Wathiq has the charisma and experience to turn the Rhinos into a formidable force in the country.

“With Mohd Asyraaf and Burhan around him, we are optimistic that they can put the team in the right direction.

Wathiq took over the hot seat from Croatian Drago Mamic, whose contract has not been renewed.

Wathiq also guided Iraq to their first World Cup appearance in 1986 in Mexico.

After securing a berth in the World Cup through the Asian qualifying round in 1985, unfortunately for Wathiq, he was removed as the head of the Iraq national team and was replaced by Brazilian Evaristo.

Glancing at Wathiq’s background, he received a Grade A Certificate for Professional Football Coaching in 1978 from the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt, Germany.

In 1967, he was awarded a Higher Diploma in Football and Sports Science from the German University of Physical Culture and Sport in Leipzig.

In 1961, he completed his undergraduate study and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Baghdad, Iraq.

Wathiq attended many professional courses in Cologne in 1973, London in 1969 and Germany in 1983.

From 1958 to 1967, Wathiq was a player in the Iraq Super League. From 1963 to 1966 he was a player in the Iraq national football team.

Meanwhile, the FA Executive Secretary Harry Baking said that they will be holding a team management meeting soon to finalise all documentation pertaining to the players’ contracts.

“Once the matter is finalised, then we call for the official signing of the contracts,” said Harry.

Zuraindey dumps Rhinos for Perlis

KOTA KINABALU: Zuraindey Jumai could not resist the temptation of receiving a lucrative offer as he deserted his very own State team and opted to sign for Perlis instead.

Despite knowing very well that this is the time that the Rhinos need him the most after the exodus of several players at the end of last season, the midfielder tends to forget what the team has done for him in the past.

Leaving without the knowledge of his employer – the Sabah FA – makes things worse and it could even haunt him in the future.

He could have left a letter or made a simple telephone call because no team would like to be treated in such an unprofessional way.

A fuming team manager, Rahman Zakaria, when contacted said that he was very disappointed with the player.

“The least he could do was to let us know, but unfortunately he was not gentleman enough to do the right thing.

“We never wanted to let him go. It was his choice,” Rahman said.

“He could have been more patient and waited for our decision. I have spoken to him and told him that we were willing to listen to him, but instead he went AWOL for several days.

“The next thing we knew was that he had already signed for Perlis, and I’m very disappointed.

“Nevertheless, this is not going to demoralise the team as I firmly believe that we do have enough quality in the team.

“The only problem is that if he stayed it could have given us more options,” Rahman added.

“But since he has no heart to play for Sabah, I think it is better for him to go because there is no point of stopping someone who has no pride to play for the State of Sabah.

“Furthermore, one of the reasons we decided to go for local talent is because we want to create the Sabahan spirit in the team.

“We know this cannot be done over night, but slowly I’m pretty sure, we will achieve it. And we need players who are willing to fight for the team, and not play just because of the money,” Rahman said.

Meanwhile, Zuraindey when contacted admitted that it was his choice to leave the team.

He also admitted speaking to Rahman regarding his problem.

“He asked me to wait until the team management holds a meeting, but unfortunately I could not wait because I was also given a deadline by the other party (Perlis). At the end, I decided to make a move,” he said.

For the new season, Sabah has named a 25-member squad with almost half of the squad being new faces comprising ex-players as well as new talents.

With the exception of Mohd Fariss Mat Isa, who hails from Kedah and played for Kuala Muda Naza last season, the rest of the squad are local talents.

Among the 13 players retained from last season’s squad are Irwan Jamil, Harold John, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Henry Parsi, Hardy Charles Parsi, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Zainizam Marjan, Zulamri Muhammad, Rosdin Wasli and Mohd Farid Saibun, Eddie Gapil and Salvester Sindeh.

The 11 ex-Rhinos and new faces being roped for the new season are Mafry Balang, Mohd June Azrah Lala, Gasili Pangalot, Clarrey Tabad, Billyton @ Vun Ket Ming, Zaykiel Leong, Rezuan Aman Khan, Alto Jinus, Hamidin Amat and Awang Norizan Ensim, while Selyvister Saini is being promoted from the Reserve League.

And Zuraindey is the latest player to have left the team following the footsteps of Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Munir Amran, Hishamuddin Othman, Mohd Nafuzi Zain, Bobby Gonzalez, Wong Sai Kong and Chow Chee Wing.

Four new faces set to don Sabah colours

KOTA KINABALU: Four new players look set to don the Rhinos’ colours as the Sabah FA named an almost all-local squad for the new season.

Seven ex-Rhinos were also roped back into the team with one player from the Reserve League squad being promoted, while another 13 players were retained from last year’s squad.

Keningau youngster Alto Jinus, Hamidin Amat, Awang Norizan Ensim and Mohd Fariss Mat Isa are the new faces, while Selyvister Saini is being promoted from the Reserve League.

Those ex-players that are making a comeback are Mafry Balang, Mohd June Azrah Lala, Gasili Pangalot, Clarrey Tabad, Billyton @ Vun Ket Ming, Zaykiel Leong, and Rezuan Aman Khan.

The 13 players retained for another season are Irwan Jamil, Harold John, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Henry Parsi, Hardy Charles Parsi, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Zainizam Marjan, Zulamri Muhammad, Rosdin Wasli, Mohd Farid Saibun, Salvester Sindeh and Eddie Gapil

With the exception of Mohd Fariss, who hails from Kedah, the rest of the players are local.

Mohd Fariss played for Kuala Muda Naza last season.

Among those who have left the squad are Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Munir Amran, Hishamuddin Othman, Mohd Nafuzi Zain, Bobby Gonzalez, Wong Sai Kong, Chow Chee Wing and Zuraindey Jumai.

Sabah will also not be having the services of foreign players after the FA of Malaysia decided to do away with the foreign imports for the new season.

“We have formed the squad and I firmly believe that the local players will have the guts and commitment as well as determination in playing for the State team,” said team manager Rahman Zakaria.

“Even though, we have said earlier that we are going to have an all-local side, but the inclusion of Mohd Fariss is for the good of the team.

“We need to strengthen our backline, and Mohd Fariss fits the bill as he is a central defender.

“So now, it is important for the selected players to stay focused and try to improve themselves as well as they can as a team.

“The fall and rise of the team will now depend on our very own players and I believe they have the extra motivation and determination to do well for the State and the team,” said Rahman.

“As much as we want to retain the whole squad from last season, but there is no point stopping them from leaving since they have no heart to play for Sabah,” added Rahman.

The new season is expected to kick off in early January where Sabah will be playing in the Premier League for the fourth consecutive season.

Last chance for hopefuls

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos’ hopefuls will have the last opportunity to impress the Sabah FA selectors when they take on the ex-Rhinos in a friendly match scheduled for Saturday at the Likas Stadium.

The FA will be using the friendly to have the final look at all the players before they name their squad for the 2009 season.

“This is also a venue for us to have a glance at our squad for the new season. It will also enable us to know how far the team have come in their preparations,” said Rahman Zakaria.

“Since we are taking on all of our ex-players, we hope the current squad can gain something from the match.

“And once we have finalised the squad, then we will go full swing in our preparations,” the Rhinos’ team manager added.

“There is not much time left because the new season is expected to kick off in early January,” Rahman admitted.

At the moment there are about 21 hopefuls seeking a place in the State squad.

With the “loyal 12” players from last season’s squad likely to have their contracts extended for another season, that means there are between 10-13 vacant slots left in the team as the FA is looking at a squad of between 22-25 players for the new season.

The “loyal 12” are Rosdin Wasli, Zainizam Marjan, Zulamri Muhammad, Hardy Charles Parsi, Irwan Jamil, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Henry Parsi, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Zuraindey Jumai, Harold John, Mohd Radzi Hussin, and Mohd Farid Saibun.

Among those hopefuls who are likely to get the nod are Zaykiel Leong, Billyton Vun Ket Ming, Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Balang as well as Mohd Fariss Azlan from Kuala Muda Naza.

With the exception of Mohd Fariss, the rest of the players are no strangers to the team, as they are either ex-Rhinos or ex-Reserve League players.

Zuneral Lalah, Clarrey Tabad, Restu Emat, Rezuan Aman Khan, whom are also ex-Rhinos also stand a chance to don the Rhinos colours once again.

There are also several new faces as well as from the Reserve League who have been impressive during trials.

Among them are a 22-year-old striker Alto from Keningau.

Kinabatangan man Hamidin Amat, who had a short stint with Sarawak, is also in the frame for the State team.

Those from the Reserve League and Under-19 squad trying their luck are Taufik, Sylvester Saini, Andrew Adan, Nazly Puasa and Azuan Aman Khan.

There are also a few more new faces eager to play for the State team.

For the record, the deadline for registration of players for the new season is on Dec 1.

Duo staying put

KOTA KINABALU: Midfielders Zuraindey Jumai and Mohd Radzi Hussin have received lucrative offers from other states, but Rahman Zakaria insists they are not going anywhere!

The Rhinos’ team manager said none of the current players from last season’s squad who are currently training with the team will be going anywhere.

“None of them will be leaving the team, including Zuraindey and Mohd Radzi,” said Rahman, when met at the Rhinos’ friendly match against a local side, Beverly FC on Sunday.

“I have spoken to both players, and they admitted receiving offers from another team. But they are not going anywhere. They have expressed their loyalty and will be staying put with the team,” he added.

Both Zuraindey and Mohd Radzi admitted to have been lured by Super League outfit Perlis.

They are the latest players to have been lured away from the Rhinos after flanker Azrul Ejati Damsah and goalkeeper Harold John, who has caught the eyes of Johor.

The foursome played a big part in the friendly game on Sunday – a clear indication that they have no plan to seek greener pastures elsewhere at least for the new season.

“I don’t think they have the heart to desert the team as they realise that this is the time the team needs them the most after what had happened. The current players are those who have shown their loyalty to the team since day one,” said Rahman.

The Rhinos experienced an exodus of players at the end of last season where more than half of the first team squad left.

However, only one Sabah-born player deserted the team – Bobby Gonzalez, who is believed to have signed for DPMM of Brunei.

The other two Sabahans – Eddie Gapil and Salvester Sindeh – who have no intention of leaving – have been forced out.

They are likely to be called by their employer Police for the new season. Unless their services are not needed by their employer, then there is a big possibility of them donning the Rhinos’ colours once again.

Among those players who have left the team are Ahmad Tharmini Saiban (joining Johor), Mohd Nafuzi Zain (Kelantan), Mohd Munir Amran, Chow Chee Wing (both signing for Felda United), Hishamuddin Othman (Kuala Lumpur) and Wong Sai Kong (Sarawak).

And most of the players who have left the team are first team players under former coach Croatian Drago Mamic, whose contract has not been renewed by the Sabah FA.

And the players who have decided to stay with the team are skipper Rosdin Wasli, Zainizam Marjan, Zulamri Muhammad, Hardy Charles Parsi, Irwan Jamil, Mohd Salawi Jasad, Henry Parsi, Azrul, Zuraindey, Harold, Radzi, and Mohd Farid Saibun.

Meanwhile, those who are tipped to make it into the state squad are Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Ballang, Zaykiel Leong as well as several new faces.

The FA is expected to announce its squad by month end.

Meanwhile, the FA’s hope of going for an-all Sabah side may not materialise after all.

They realise they are short of experience at the backline and may look elsewhere to backup their defence.

At the moment a former Kuala Muda Naza defender – Mohd Faris – has been tried out and he looked impressive in his first appearance for the team in the friendly.

Loyalty pays off for 12 Rhinos

KOTA KINABALU: The 12 players from the 2007/08 squad who have not shown any indication of going elsewhere for the new season will be rewarded for their loyalty to the team.

Yesterday, the Sabah FA Executive Secretary Harry Baking said that these players are almost certain to be retained for the new season. However, Harry said that it doesn’t mean that they can take things for granted as the FA will not hesitate to get rid of the rotten apples. “We are delighted to see that these players have decided to stick with the team. I can say that their place in the team is as good as secured. “But then again, like the rest of the players, they will still have to prove that they deserve a place in the team. “There is no point of having players who don’t want to improve and fight for the team.

“Since we are banking on an all-local side for the new season, we really hope to see these players lead by example because they have been in the team for quite a while now,” said Harry.

Commenting on those who have left the team, Harry said that there is no point of stopping them from leaving as they have no heart to play for the team. “Since they are no longer interested to play for Sabah there is no reason for us to stop them from leaving. We wish them luck with their new teams, and on our part we will try our best to build the team around our very own homegrown talent.

“We believe we have local players who are more than capable of spearheading our challenge,” said Harry. On the current hopefuls currently training and undergoing trials with the team, Harry said that some of them have impressed the team officials. “We are going to play several more friendly matches and we will have a good look at them, but I believe there are a few of them who could easily fit into the team.

Among those who have decided to stick with the Rhinos are skipper Rosdin Wasli, Zainizam Marjan, Hardy Charles Parsi, Harold John, Henry Parsi, Irwan Jamil, Md Farid Saibun, Md Radzi Hussin, Md Salawi Ahmad Jasad, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Zulamri Muhammad and Zuraindey Jumai. Those players who have opted to look for greener pastures are Bobby Gonzalez, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Chow Chee Weng, Hishamuddin Othman, Md Nafuzi Md Zain, Munir Imran and Wong Sai Kong.

In the case of Eddie Gapil and Salvester Sindeh, they are likely to be called up by their employer Police for the new season. Among those players who are set to make a comeback into the state team are defender Md Reithuddin Awang Embran, Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Ballang and Zaykiel Leong to name a few.

Rezuan Aman Khan, Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton as well as several more players from the Reserve League and Under-19 squad are trying their luck with the team. Meanwhile, Harry also revealed that they are likely to announce the team’s coach in the next couple of days. “There is one or two minor things that we need to look into. Once everything is settled, we will make the announcement. I think it is going to be done by this weekend or the latest will be early next week,” said Harry.

At the moment, the Rhinos are currently training under assistant coach Burhan Ajui. Iraqi Wathiq Naji, who is the hot favourite to take the Rhinos’ hot seat, was also seen at the team’s training scene the last two days.

Foreign-local combination …

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah FA may opt for a foreign-local combination to take charge of the Rhinos next season.

Although at press time everything was not very clear, but there is a possibility of having a foreign-local combination in managing the Rhinos.

When met at the Rhinos’ friendly match at the Likas Stadium on Thursday night, the Sabah FA officials were tight-lipped when asked to comment.

Nevertheless, they assured that they would announce the name of the man to take charge of the team within this week.

Among those present at the friendly were acting President Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, Treasurer Joehari Datuk Ayub, Secretary General Alfred Lojiton, team manager and Supreme Council member Rahman Zakaria and the FA’s Executive Secretary Harry Baking.

But if the foreign-local combination is not going to materialise, then Iraqi Wathiq Naji is the hot favourite to take over the Rhinos’ hot seat!

He is likely to get the nod as the FA has little options as far as their search for a local coach is concerned.

Wathiq was also seen at the friendly, alongside former Justin Ganai, who is also in the frame for the job.

Mohd Asyraaf Fong Abdullah, who also applied for the post, was nowhere to be seen. He was believed to be outstation.

The FA is looking for a man to lead the team after deciding not to renew the contract of its former coach, Croatian Drago Mamic.

And the FA is looking for someone with strong leadership … in short a fighter, and Wathiq seems to fit the bill.

Wathiq, 68, has vast experience in the game, having guided his country to the World Cup in 1986.

And he is no stranger to the Malaysian soccer scene having had a one session stint with Kuala Lumpur in 2001. Furthermore, he has been based in Malaysia for quite sometime. In fact in 2000, he also got the nod to coach Perak, only to find out that Karl Weigang was the man the Perak FA named as their coach.

The former Iraq midfielder also succeeded in guiding Iraq to the Olympic Games in 1980.

For the new season, where Sabah will be playing in the Premier League for the fourth consecutive season, they will be banking on all-Sabah players.

The new season is scheduled to kick off in early January.

Rhinos go local

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos will be spearheaded by local talents next season after the Sabah FA decided to go local as they try to bring the Sabahan spirit back into the team.

The FA acting President Datuk Lawrence Gimbang said they will use all local players for the new season that is scheduled to kick off in early January next year.

Gimbang said it is timely for them to make such a move, pointing out that it is for the betterment of the team.

“We have just decided that we will go all local next season. And we want them to play for the State with full commitment,” he said, after chairing the FA’s team management committee meeting at its office in Likas on Monday night.

He went on to say that the FA of Malaysia (FAM)’s decision to do away with the foreign players next season is indeed a blessing in disguise as they will have the opportunity to bank on the local talents.

“The move (by FAM) is a blessing in disguise and we will fully utilise the local players to carry the Rhinos’ challenge in the coming campaign.

“We will not sign any local imports from the Peninsula or anywhere else,” he said.

Also present were Secretary General Alfred Lojitan, Treasurer Joehari Datuk Ayub, Executive Secretary Harry Baking and Team Manager Rahman Zakaria.

Meanwhile Joehari, a former team manager, added that the decision augers well with the efforts to bring back the spirit of Sabah among the players.

And Joehari is confident that a State team with an all-Sabahan line-up will be equally capable of spearheading the State challenge in search for glory in the domestic football scene.

He said Sabah did it in style during the time of ‘King’ James Wong and Hassan Sani and that it is possible for a repeat of the same achievement.

“We have more than enough players to form a good team … several of them have come back to the current training squad and we will welcome more.

However, he said that there are procedures to be followed and there will be no automatic choice.

“Each and every one of the players must fight and prove their worth … those who fit into the team’s criteria will be selected,” he said.

The State squad comprising existing players, former players and those from youth teams are currently undergoing pre-season training under acting coach Burhan Ajui.

Among those ex-players who are keen to make a comeback and have been training with the State squad are Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Ballang, Zaykiel Leong, Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton and Rezuan Aman Khan to name a few.

In a related development, Gimbang said that they will name the coach for the State team within this week.

“We have shortlisted our candidates and we will interview them and will hold another team management meeting before we name our man,” said Gimbang.

Working against the clock

KOTA KINABALU: The exodus of senior players has left the Sabah FA with nothing but a lot of rebuilding work to do in preparing its team for the new season.

With only about two more months or so left before the new season kicks off, there is not much time left for them to get the team ready ahead of the kick off which is expected to be early January.

At the moment, the Rhinos’ preparations are far from encouraging with assistant coach Burhan Ajui given the “heavy” responsibility of taking charge of the team since they began their preparations early this month.

The FA’s scheduled team management meeting on Monday is in fact a much-awaited moment as a lot of decisions will be made. Among the hot topic that needs to be addressed urgently is the hiring of a new coach.

The hiring of new players as well as their preparation plans will also be on the agenda.

For the new season, all of the local imports have left the team.

Defender Ahmad Tharmini Saiban has signed for his home state Johor, while Munir Amran and Chow Chee Wing are believed to have been signed by Felda United.

Hishamuddin Othman is joining Kuala Lumpur, while Mohd Nafuzi Zain is signing with Kelantan.

Wong Sai Kong is almost certain to join Sarawak.

Bobby Gonzales is believed to have signed for Brunei, while both Salvester Sindeh and Eddie Gapil’s future in the team is still uncertain as the duo are likely be called by their employer Police.

With the FA of Malaysia’s ruling to do away with the foreign players, it has left the Rhinos to do without more than a dozen of their regular faces for the new season.

The only seniors left in the team now are Zainizam Marjan and Rosdin Wasli.

The rest are the three young goalkeepers namely Irwan Jamil, Harold John and Mohd Salawi Jasad.

There are also rumours that Irwan and flanker Azrul Ejati Damsah are being lured by Johor.

Zuraindey Jumai, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Zulamri Muhammad, Mohd Farid Saibun, Henry Parsi, Hardy Charles Parsi are among those sticking with the team.

And those expected to make a comeback into the state team are Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Balang, Joey Ryan Gundok, Zaykiel Leong and Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton.

Restu Emat, Rezuan Aman Khan, Mohd Zuneral Lalah, Mohd Reithuddin Awang Emran, and Ian James Wong have also been seen training with the team.

There are also a few more players from the Reserve League and Under-19 squad as well as a few new faces training with the team.

'Taufan' landa Sabah

Oleh MUSTAPA LAKAWA
mustapa@kosmo.com.my

Salawi Jasa
