SABAH, KL PLUS SHARE THE SPOILS

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah held leaders KL Plus to a two-all draw to share the spoils in a Premier League challenge at the Likas Stadium last night. The result was not what both teams wanted, but in the end it was a fair one considering that they had equal chances at each other’s goalmouths. The drawn game saw the Rhinos lose ground on other teams like second-placed Kuala Muda Naza and Kelantan, who scored victories over Harimau Muda and Armed Forces respectively.

Kuala Muda Naza scored a narrow 2-1 win, while Kelantan edged Armed Forces 3-2. But on the plus side, Sabah managed to claim the fourth spot after Johor Pasir Gudang suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Proton FC in another match at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya. KL Plus remain at the top of the standings on 44 points, but now their lead has been cut from four to two points as Kuala Muda Naza piled the pressure on the leaders.

Kelantan maintained their third placing on 38 points, followed by Sabah with 34, while Johor in fifth on 33. Sabah suffered a minor setback prior to the clash as they were forced to rest Englishman Jamie Phoenix due to injury. Lanky defender Mohd Munir Amran also failed to take the field as he had to serve a one-match automatic suspension for yellow card offences. That prompted the Rhinos’ chief coach Drago Mamic to make five changes to the side that defeated Police 3-1 and eventually booked a place in the FA Cup quarterfinals on a 4-3 aggregate last Thursday.

Besides Jamie and Munir, Julamri Muhammad and Eddie Gapil were forced to start from the bench, while Henry Parsi was left out from the starting list. Instead Chow Chee Wing, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Hisamuddin Othman, Zuraindey Jumai and Ahmad Tharmini Saiban were given the responsibilities to do the job. Sabah started off well enough to take the lead in the seventh minute when Salvester Sindeh pounced on a superb cross from Kokhrei Dze Irakli from the left side of the field.

Three minutes later, Kokhrei could have put Sabah 2-0 up in front but unfortunately his 35-metre free-kick hit the woodwork. He tested KL Plus’ Mohd Amirol Jaihan again in the 18th minute. He had already managed to beat the keeper, but this time his lobbed ball went wide. After having a superb first 20 minutes, Sabah found themselves struggling for the rest of the first half as it was the visitors who dominated play. Giant striker Alex Agbo could have put KL Plus on level terms in the 38th minute, but fortunately for Sabah his attempt hit the crossbar. But Alex was not to be denied a goal when in the 44th minute he managed to free himself from Dragic Dalibor to unleash a grounder from inside the box that defeated Sabah custodian Irwan Jamil, that eventually saw the first half end on level terms.

Things look more balanced in the second half, and Sabah squandered a golden opportunity when Kokhrei centred for the unmarked Azrul who was inside the penalty box. But unfortunately, the young Azrul failed to control the ball and it was cleared by a defender.

Then it was KL Plus’ turn to test Irwan Jamil, but fortunately for Sabah, Tercio Nunes Machado’s long drive went wide. In the 69th minute Kokhrei saw his dipping shot from about 25 metres sail over the bar despite the keeper being already beaten. He was presented with another opportunity in the 74th minute when he found space inside the KL Plus penalty box only to find his shot blocked by the keeper. Then Mohd Hairul Nizam Hanif stunned the about 4,000 home fans when he put his side into the lead in the 80th minute by connecting a corner taken by Tercio Nunes.

But their celebrations were shortlived as Dragic made amends by heading home a Chow Chee Wing cross from an ensuing corner three minutes later.

DRAGO’S WINNING COMBINATION

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria believes they have a “winning combination”. The Rhinos’ team manager hails the chief coach Drago Mamic for turning the team into a formidable side. Rahman said while Drago’s “magic” seems to be working well, on the other hand the players have managed to execute and convert his plans during matches. “So far so good … we are pleased with the way he coaches the team. We are also happy to see how the players have responded. “It seems that we have a winning combination here. It is our hope to see this continue until the end of the season,” said Rahman. He then congratulated the Croatian and his players for a job well done.

“He (Drago) certainly deserves a pat on the back, and the same goes to the players,” Rahman added. Drago, who is into his second season, guided the team to an eight-match unbeaten run in the Premier League before being humbled 2-1 by Police in the first leg of the FA Cup second round.

However, they made amends on Thursday as they showed the Cops the exit door after registering a 3-1 second leg victory to march into the quarterfinals 4-3 on aggregate.

However, Rahman was quick to remind the team from being satisfied with what they have achieved thus far, including their feat of advancing into the FA Cup last eight.

“It is still too early for us to celebrate. The good work must continue because from now on things will get a lot tougher,” Rahman said. The draw for the FA Cup quarterfinals will be held in the national capital today (2pm). The other quarter-finalists include reigning champions Kedah, Selangor, Terengganu, Felda United, Melaka, Pahang and Kuala Muda Naza.

The first leg of the quarterfinals has been slated for April 8, while the return leg on April 22. To a question, Rahman admitted that it was a big gamble by naming Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli in place of the injured Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer, Sabah’s leading scorer with eight goals, ahead of the FA Cup date with Police. But Rahman was glad it paid off handsomely.

“It was a gamble that we needed to take,” he said, citing that the decision was made in the best interests of the team. Rahman also explained that Andre was dropped not because of his performances, but due to his injury. “He is facing six weeks lay-off due to injury on his thigh and with us facing crucial Premier League matches – against the top four teams in the standings – we need to work on something because we want to have the best squad for those matches.

“And we thought Kokhrei is our solution because he has been brilliant in training. “The FAM’s (FA of Malaysia) rule states that we can replace a player who is injured and we decided to do just that after much thought. Rahman also explained that Andre was still part of the team saying “he is only rested”. It was Kokhrei who inspired Sabah to victory by netting a brace in his debut.

It took Kokhrei only two minutes to open his account for Sabah, before scoring his second from an indirect free-kick in the 68th minute. Stand-in captain Salvester Sindeh scored the other goal for Sabah in the 13th minute, while former Rhino Sanjos Sundawat netted for Police in the 48th minute.

Sabah could have added a fourth, but attacking midfielder Jamie Phoenix failed to cap an outstanding performance with a goal, failing in a one-on-one situation late in the game.

Despite the Rhinos’ fine run, Rahman said that they will take one match at a time and that now they would switch their focus back to the Premier League with leaders KL Plus their next visitors at the Likas Stadium on Sunday.

SABAH ADVANCE

KOTA KINABALU: Georgian striker KokHrei Dze Irakli made his debut by storm as he scored twice to help Sabah march into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup competition.

The Rhinos claimed their ticket after registering a 3-1 second leg victory to advance through on a 4-3 aggregate. KokHrei was certainly the surprise inclusion in the Rhinos’ first team after replacing Brazilian striker Andre Scotti Ossemer as the Rhinos’ third foreigner in the team. He was only cleared to play hours before kick off upon receiving his International Transfer Certificate.

Andre, who is the current top scorer with eight goals in all competitions, was forced to watch the game from the fans’ stands. But the Sabah FA’s brave move paid off as the 28-year-old KokHrei made an early impression by scoring the opener just after two minutes of play, before netting his second with a spectacular goal from an indirect free kick from just outside the penalty box.

Salvester Sindeh headed Sabah’s second, while Sabah-born ex-junior Rhino and Police skipper Sanjos Sundawat scored the sole goal for the visitors. But despite KokHrei’s two-goal heroic feat, Englishman Jamie Phoenix was the “star” for the Rhinos as he was surely the most outstanding among them all. The Rhinos’ head coach Drago Mamic seemed to notice this, and refused to substitute him despite the fact that Jamie seemed to be carrying an injury after receiving several knocks.

Instead, it was KokHrei who was replaced as he had to make way for Chow Chee Wing in the 70th minute. Overall, it was quite a performance from the State squad.

They took an early lead when KokHrei scored from close range. It started from Jamie who burst from the centre of the field before feeding the unmarked Julamri at the left side. The nippy flanker centered the ball for KokHrei, who coolly slotted home the opener from close range. Then it was Salvester’s turn to put his name on the score sheet when he headed a Mohd Nafuzi Zain cross into an empty net after 13 minutes of play. The half ended with Sabah taking a 2-0 lead.

But three minutes after the break, Police were back on level terms (on aggregate) when out of the blue Sanjos curled the ball past the hapless Sabah custodian who was caught off position.

From then on, the match gained momentum with Police holding the upper hand until in the 68th minute when Police substitute goalkeeper Abdul Rahman Ismail was penalised for holding the ball over six seconds.

The Rhinos were awarded an indirect free kick. Eddy and KokHrei were there to execute the free kick with KokHrei having the first touch before Eddy made a back pass for KokHrei to unleash a beautiful curling shot that defeated the hapless Abdul Rahman.

Trailing by two goals, Police put more pressure on the home side, but none of their attempts found the target. Instead, it was Sabah who could have sealed the victory when in the 88th minute, Jamie was presented with a golden opportunity where he only had the keeper to beat. But unfortunately the Englishman’s attempt was blocked by the keeper.

ALL OUT ATTACK

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos are confident of overcoming the one-goal deficit that will eventually earn them a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals next month. The Rhinos take on the Police in the return leg of the second round at the Likas Stadium tonight. The Rhinos will have home ground advantage plus local support to bank on while the visiting Police will be trying to defend a slender one-goal cushion after winning the first leg encounter 2-1 last week.

In order for the Rhinos to cruise through, they need a simple 1-0 win or by two goals should they concede any goal or goals as the away goal rule will apply for this Cup clash.

“We will be going all out for victory,” Rahman Zakaria said yesterday. “We must not look back but to look ahead. This is our only chance to progress through in the competition. We have nothing to lose, so an all out attack will be the name of our game!

“We must try to prove that we are one of the best team in the M-League. When you look at all the teams (in the M-League) there is not much difference between those teams in the Super League and the Premier League.

“As long as we can give our 110 per cent effort and have self belief, I’m sure we will achieve our mission. “At the same time, I also hope for a good turn out from the fans that could help spur the team to play harder and wholeheartedly. “At the moment, everything is OK in the team in terms of the availability of players. With the exception of our team captain (Rosdin Wasli) the rest are available for options,” the Rhinos team manager said, adding that Rosdin is yet to fully recover from his injury.

Rahman also reminded the Rhinos that although they are a Premier League outfit they are capable of defeating teams from the Super League. “As I have said earlier, we must try our best and double our efforts in order to achieve our goals. As long as we stay united and do it as a team, our chances of winning are wide open.

“I believe this team has all what it takes to be winners. We have done well in the Premier League lately and I don’t see why we cannot do the same in the competition,” said Rahman.

“I believe our head coach (Drago Mamic) has done his homework and he surely has his own strategy how to tackle the opponents. And I also believe that the players are ready to execute Drago’s game plan.

Rahman also said that Englishman Jamie Phoenix, who was rested in the first leg, will be brought into first team action. However Andre Scotti Ossemer, who scored the opener for Sabah in the first leg, is still a doubtful starter for tonight’s clash. “He has a slight injury, and we are not sure whether we can play him. It all depends on his progress in the next 24 hours,” said Rahman.

BEWARE OF BUDI!

KOTA KINABALU: An Indonesian international in Budi Sudarsono will be the man to watch as Sabah take on Police in the return leg of the FA Cup challenge at the Likas Stadium on Thursday.

The nippy attacking midfielder scored a spectacular equaliser by flicking the ball past Sabah’s young custodian Irwan Jamil in the first leg encounter last Friday where Sabah, despite taking a first-half 1-0 lead were forced to end their eight-match unbeaten run. But it was Budi’s teammate in Mohd Aliff Amiruddin who undid the Rhinos’ impressive run thus far this season by scoring the winner in the 62nd minute after Budi put his side on level terms two minutes after the break.

Sabah had not been beaten in the Premier League prior to the FA Cup second round clash. “He is certainly one player that we need to watch,” commented Rahman Zakaria.

“However, it would be wrong for us to entirely focus on him. What we would do is to play our game and play our hearts out,” he added. On Sabah’s part, he will certainly be banking on their top scorer Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer to score the goals.

Andre, who has netted seven goals in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup, where he scored the opener in the first leg encounter against Police, will have the company of either Bobby Gonzales or Salvester Sindeh to spearhead the Rhinos’ attack.

At the same time, Englishman Jamie Phoenix is another player that Sabah can count on to terrorise the visitor’s backline. The other foreign player in the Rhinos’ squad is Dragic Dalibor, a defender.

Down but not out!

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah succumbed to their first defeat in nine matches after they were edged 2-1 by Police in the second round of the FA Cup at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya on Friday.

The Rhinos, who went into the first leg tie with an unbeaten streak of eight matches in the Premier League, were left with disappointment, and now will need to make amends in the return leg on Wednesday at the Likas Stadium.

Despite taking a first-half one-goal lead through Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer, who drew first blood at the half-hour mark, they allowed the homesters to score twice after the break that eventually saw them suffer their first defeat after 810 minutes of action. Rahman Zakaria was not at all impressed with the way the team approached the game, which according to him, they were let down by their own doing. The Rhinos’ team manager said they could have at least snatched a draw if they were more focused on the game.

“To be fair it was a balanced game in the first half, although I think we were the more aggressive side. “But unfortunately, after we scored the goal, we seemed to be carried away by the lead. “This was one of our main weaknesses, where we took it easy after we were leading. “I have no complaints on the other aspects of the game. They played to instructions and so on. They tried, but in this case it was not enough, because after the break, we seemed to lose focus.

“So I really hope the players realise that they must stay focused and give their 110 per cent for the entire 90 minutes and not otherwise. “They have to start realising that nothing is won until the final whistle!

“Last night, if we played as way we did in the first half, it could have been a different result. It was pretty obvious that it was a lacklustre performance after the break. We seemed not to be in the game, and we must rectify this instantly. “Our head coach (Drago Mamic) has done his job, and is doing great at the moment, but there is nothing much he could do, if the players did not put much effort in their game … like what we did in the second half.

“The referee did not help either, but I’m not going to say it aloud here because we are going to lodge a report and let the FA of Malaysia decide. Budi Sudarsono equalised for Police two minutes after the break, while Mohd Afif Amiruddin netted the winner in the 62nd minute. But Rahman said, they may be down, but not out just yet.

“I think we are still pretty much in the race. There are another 90 minutes of play. For the return leg, we just need a simple win,” said Rahman. With the away goal rule taken into account, Sabah will have the simplest of tasks – needing to win 1-0 to cruise into the last eight.

Rhinos’ promotion quest alive and kicking!

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos’ quest for Super League promotion is pretty much alive and kicking! On Monday, they extended their unbeaten run to eight matches with a 2-1 victory over Selangor PKNS at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya. The victory helped them to share the third spot with Johor Pasir Gudang in the 13-team standings as both sides are level on 33 points, with the same number of goals scored or against as well as matches played. Rahman Zakaria is delighted to see the team gaining momentum, and believes that finishing the season among the top three teams is very much within their reach.

He, however, reminded his charges not to rest on their laurels, as from now on every game will be crucial and important. “We must try not to make any mistakes such as dropping points and so on. We have to maintain what we are doing. To be a good team the hard work must continue,” the Rhinos’ team manager said.

“I’m happy to see that the players can now adapt to the system introduced by our chief coach (Drago Mamic). They are getting better with each game and more matured as a team. If we can maintain this, I’m very optimistic about our chances,” said Rahman. “It has been quite a performance from the team in our last eight games. But we don’t want them to be satisfied with what they have done so far because the war is far from over.

“Furthermore, we are now entering the crucial stage of the league. There are another eight matches to go, and we must try to win as many games as possible. In the match against PKNS, Sabah were almost denied the full points when they conceded a penalty late in the game. However, young goalkeeper, Irwan Jamil, who made an early blunder to allow Mohizam Shah, to reduce the deficit for his side in the 76th minute, made amends by saving ex-Rhino flanker P. Rajesh’s spot kick.

Sabah took a two-goal lead with Hisamuddin Othman drawing first blood with his 44th minute effort before Andre Scottie Ossemer netted his seventh goal of the season in the 70th minute.

“Overall we played well. We dominated throughout the game. However, the muddy pitch just made it difficult for both sides, but we still managed to score goals, thanks to some fine football from the players.

The Rhinos’ chief coach Drago made three changes to the side that thrashed Felda United 4-1 prior to the clash. Hat-trick hero Salvester Sindeh and Chow Chee Wing were forced to start from the bench. Drago opted for Bobby Gonzales for Salvester, while Eddie Gapil came in for Chow. Zuraindey Jumai took over from the suspended Mohd Nafuzi Zain.

The rest of the players were retained with Dragic Dalibor, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Mohd Munir Amran, Wong Sai Kong, Jamie Phoenix, Andre Scottie and Hisamuddin all seeing first team action.

Later in the second half, Drago brought in Salvester, Zulamri Muhammad and Chow for Jamie, Eddie and Bobby respectively. Now Rahman said they would switch their focus to the FA Cup where they will be travelling to the national capital to take on Police in the first leg, second round on Friday.

TOUGH ENCOUNTER

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah take on Selangor PKNS tonight determined to collect maximum points in their pursuit of Super League promotion next season. The Premier League tie to be played at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya will also see the Rhinos hoping to stretch their unbeaten run to eight matches. But the Rhinos know it is not going to be an easy night.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria hopes the team will not waste the opportunity to keep pace with the top teams. “They defeated us in Tawau in the first round, so we must make sure it won’t happen again this time. We are in the crucial stage of the league and we must try to win every game from now on.

The 0-1 home defeat inflicted by Mohd Fadzil Hashim’s goal was one of the three losses Sabah suffered this season. “I believe with our current form we will be able to get the points. It was very unfortunate for us in the first round but we have long recovered from it and our league position speaks volumes for that. “We must win the game in order to have more edge and confidence because of the crucial matches ahead of us, including in the FA Cup.

PKNS Selangor, currently eighth in the standings, will be the lowest ranked opponents that the Rhinos will take on in the next few weeks. After the PKNS date, Sabah will resume their FA Cup challenge by taking on struggling Super League side Police on Mar 21 (away) and Mar 27 (home). The FA Cup matches will be followed by league games against leaders KL Plus FC on Mar 30 at the Likas Stadium, before traveling to face second placed Kuala Muda Naza on April 4.

Then they host Kelantan, who are just one point behind in fifth place, at the Likas Stadium on April 11 before meeting third placed Johor Pasir Gudang away on April 14.

“I believe Sabah can do it … the team are capable (to win) either at home or away,” he added. For the match tonight, Sabah will again miss the services of injured captain Rosdin Wasli who is only expected to return to the side in two weeks. Mohd Nafuzi Zain will also stay behind as he is suspended after collecting three yellow cards. But Rahman said the team is not about one or two players.

“We have capable players waiting for their chance and this will be an ideal time for them to show us their quality. “All the players are very important to the team and we must work together to ensure Sabah fulfill its potential,” he said. “Furthermore I’m sure that the chief coach (Drago Mamic) has plotted the strategy for the game … as long as the players play to the game plan, I believe we will be able to return victorious,” added Rahman.

RHINOS THRASH FELDA UNITED

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah thrashed Felda United FC 4-1 to keep their promotion hopes intact as they moved up from fifth to fourth after the comfortable victory at the Likas Stadium last night.

The homesters were leading 3-1 at half time with Salvester netting twice before Jamie Phoenix added the third. Felda United’s goal was scored by Bayemi Maemble Eric Arsene. After the break, Salvester netted his third and eventually completed his hat-trick. With Kelantan being held to a one-all draw by Kuala Lumpur in another tie at the KLFA Stadium, Sabah moved a rung up on 30 points. They are level on 30 points with Johor Pasir Gudang, who did not see action last night, but stay behind as the Southern State team have a better goal average. Kelantan dropped to fifth on 29 points.

Sabah started the game pretty well and could have taken the lead in the 13th minute when Hishamuddin sent a through ball for Jamie Phoenix. The Englishman then centred the ball which found Salvester. Salvester managed to connect, but unfortunately his close-range attempt went above the crossbar.

Then in the 16th minute, Salvester was again denied from helping his side take the lead when a Chow Chee Wing cross found him again at the heart of the Felda United penalty box. This time, Salvester’s powerful header was blocked by the keeper Rozaimie Rohim. A minute later, Salvester was presented with another scoring opportunity, and it was Jamie again the provider, but again, Salvester failed to connect the ball into the net as his attempt went wide.

But in the 38th minute, Salvester was not to be denied from putting his name on the score-sheet when a Mohd Nafuzi Zain free-kick from about 40 metres found Salvester, whose glancing header defeated the hapless Rozaimie for the first time.

But Sabah’s celebrations were shortlived as Felda United equalised a minute later with Bayemi Maemble having the simplest of tasks by tapping the ball into the Sabah net after Irwan Jamil failed to make a clean catch off Badrul Afzan Razali’s free-kick from the right side of the Sabah goalmouth. But the equaliser seemed to awaken the homesters as Salvester unleashed a powerful grounder from inside the box to restore their lead in the 42nd minute. Then Jamie struck the third inside the first-half injury time to see them take a healthy lead at half time. After the break, Sabah seemed to be contented with the lead and defended for almost the entire half.

However, they did manage to increase the lead in the 54th minute when Salvester finished off an attempt from Hisamuddin. It started from the left flanker who unleashed a shot from just outside the box. The keeper failed to make a clean catch that saw Salvester easily slot home the loose ball.

Felda United tried hard to make a comeback, but the Rhinos’ defence marshaled by the steady Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Mohd Munir Amran and Dragic Dalibor denied any of their attempts.

GOLDEN CHANCE TO CLOSE THE GAP

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos will be out to stretch their unbeaten run of six games, and may go for the jugular when they take on the unpredictable Premier League new boys Felda United at the Likas Stadium tonight. Rahman Zakaria said they are not taking any chances and that they must give their level best against the inexperienced Felda United whom they narrowly defeated (2-1) in the first round.

Then Sabah needed an injury-time goal from Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer to win the match. Andre, who made his debut in the game, scored the equaliser for Sabah in the 70th minute after Khairul Izuan shocked the homesters by helping his side to take the lead after just 22 minutes of play.

“That was a lesson learnt,” said Rahman, while assuring that there would be no repeat of such a situation. “I think we took the match too lightly and in the end we were made to struggle. “But now the players are aware that this will not be an easy game and that they must be on top of their form in order to get the right result,” he said. “Furthermore, it is just not right to underestimate them. If you look at the standings, they are only six points away from us in sixth placing. So tonight there is no question of us to taking this match lightly.

The Rhinos are fifth in the standings on 27 points and this will be a golden opportunity for them to close the gap with the top teams. With third-placed Johor Pasir Gudang (30 points) having a rest day, and fourth-placed Kelantan (28 points) having a tricky trip to Kuala Lumpur in an away battle, a victory could see Sabah move to at least fourth if other results favour them. League leaders KL Plus (37 points) will have an easy night by taking on lowly Armed Forces, while second-placed Kuala Muda Naza (33 points) will play away to Proton FC.

Rahman said the Rhinos chances of winning (against Felda United) are good.

“As long as we are not over confident, and with the spirit that we have now our chances look good. But I believe the team can handle the pressure and the situation we are in now where winning is all that matters. “So I hope the players will give their 110 per cent effort to get the points. “Our head coach (Drago Mamic) has done his part and all those minor weaknesses in the previous game have been rectified. Rahman also reminded the players that the most important thing tonight would be to score goals. He said to do this, they cannot rely on one player and that it must be done with team effort.

“Who scores the goals is not important, but what is more important is we try to score as many goals as possible and win the game,” said Rahman. At the same time, Rahman also called on the Rhinos loyal fans to turn up in full force to support the team. Ironically, Sabah have been on an unbeaten run since the 2-1 victory over Felda United on January 28. They went on to win the next three games (against Melaka 3-0, Shahzan Muda 1-0 and Harimau Muda 2-0), before being held to a one-all draw by Harimau Muda – no thanks to the injury time strike by Yusaini Hafiz.

But Sabah were back to winning ways as they edged Melaka 3-2 in their last game away from home. Rahman hinted that there will be no major changes to the side that defeated Melaka with hat-trick hero Andre Scotti set to start alongside Englishman Jamie Phoenix in attack. “If there are any changes it would be because of injury, suspension or game plan,” said Rahman.

SABAH VS POLICE

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will meet Super League strugglers Police in the second round of the FA Cup challenge. Sabah, who received a first round bye, will play the first leg encounter away on March 21, while the return leg at the Likas Stadium is scheduled for March 27. The 1995 champions Sabah are gaining momentum in the Premier League challenge in the fight for promotion, and are currently fifth in the 13-team standings on 27 points, 10 points behind leaders KL Plus, and only six points away from second placed Kuala Muda Naza.

As for Police, the 2006-2007 Premier League champions are struggling in the Super League and are now fighting for survival. They are currently 11th placed in the 13-team Super League after merely managing to collect 14 points from 14 games played thus far. They are only one point away from the drop zone currently occupied by Sarawak (13 points), while Penang languish at the bottom of the standings on nine points.

Meanwhile, Rahman Zakaria praised his charges following their comeback victory over Melaka on Monday. Rahman said the Rhinos’ never-say-die attitude enabled the team to collect the valuable points from the away trip. It seemed that Sabah were buried after 23 minutes of play when they conceded two easy goals with Kofi Estiba netting for the homesters. Kofi struck the opener in the seventh minute before adding his second in the 23rd minute.

But Sabah’s Brazilian striker Andre Scotti Ossemer managed to level the scoreline as he struck twice from the spot. Sabah earned their first spot kick in the 31st minute while the second came in the 39th minute. “Melaka were very aggressive right from the start and they took a 2-0 lead after capitalising on our sloppy defending. “Andre was excellent on the night. He was brought down twice inside the box resulting in the two spot kicks.

“The match could have ended there (when Melaka were two goals up), but I’m glad to see that the players never showed any signs of giving up and our determination finally paid off as we were rewarded with two spot kicks, which Andre converted. I’m happy with how the team responded after falling behind. Rahman said the Rhinos were a much better side in the second half where Andre completed his hat-trick with his 69th minute effort. “The players showed great character in implementing the game plan and fought a successful come-from-behind win,” added Rahman. Rahman went on to say that the players must now focus and maintain their impressive unbeaten streak to ensure keeping the pace with the teams above them.

“We must be consistent in the future matches … I’m confident we will go far with the players in top shape and most of the players are free from injury,” he said. Sabah remain in fifth spot of the league on 27 points from 14 games and trail leaders KL Plus FC by 10 points, who have played a game more. Sabah will take on Felda United FC of Kuala Lumpur next at the Likas Stadium on Mar 14.

NOT PUSHOVERS!

KOTA KINABALU: The Rhinos resume their Premier League challenge after about a two-week break due to the just concluded 12th general election, hoping to humble Melaka at the Hang Tuah Stadium tonight.

Team manager Rahman Zakaria is confident his charges will maintain their winning feat over their unpredictable opponents. In the first round, the Rhinos trounced Melaka 3-0 at the Tawau Sports Complex early last month. However, Rahman reminded his charges not to take the game lightly as this will be a different ball game altogether. Furthermore, he said Melaka seem to be a different team now as compared to the last one month or so. “They won 2-0 at the same venue in their last game against the Armed Forces. The victory will surely boost their morale or confidence,” said Rahman.

“On our part, we just need to play our best game,” he added. At the same time, Rahman also wants the players to give their fullest concentration throughout the game. He said he found out that they have been the victims of their own doing by conceding late goals in the past with the latest being in their last game two weeks ago against the Harimau Muda (National Under-19).

The match eventually ended in a one-all draw after the Rhinos conceded a late goal. “The equaliser came deep into injury time and we cannot afford to make such a mistake … we lost two precious points because of that. “It was not only during that game as in the past we tended to lost concentration towards the last 10 to 15 minutes before the final whistle. We must be able to defend during that period of time because one mistake could be costly,” he added. Rahman also advised the players to play according to the plan from chief coach Drago Mamic effectively, without bothering too much about the referee’s decision even when it goes against them because this will only disrupt their concentration. “The players must play to the game plan and if we are able to achieve this, then the team should be able to win and go far in the league,” added Rahman.

Rahman said with the exception of captain Rosdin Wasli (injury) as well as Radzi Hussin and Azrul Ejati Damsah (both down with fever), the rest of the players are available for the clash. Sabah are fifth in the league after playing 13 games, collecting 24 points from seven victories and three draws.
