VISITORS HUMBLE RHINOS

KOTA KINABALU: Luck-less Sabah were humbled 2-1 by visiting Shahzan Muda of Pahang in a Premier League tie at the Likas Stadium last night.

The defeat would surely put a dent on their hopes of ending their season in fourth as Johor Pasir Gudang, who despite succumbing to a 2-0 defeat to leaders Kuala Muda Naza in Johor Baru still hold a one point advantage over them. A victory could have given Sabah the slight edge, but unfortunately two blunders by goalkeeper Irwan Jamil, allowed lowly Shahzan Muda to walk home as victors.

It was certainly not a night Irwan would want to remember as his first blunder allowed Anthony Josip Milicic to slot home the opener as early as the fifth minute.

It all started from a quick counter attack from Shahzan Muda after an ensuing corner by Sabah. However, the alert Dragic Dalibor managed to outrun a Shahzan Muda player and back passed the ball to Irwan. Unfortunately, Irwan miss-kicked the ball, but Henry Parsi had the chance to clear the ball. He made a poor clearance as the loose ball found Anthony, who slotted the opening goal with ease from close range.

But the goal did not deter Sabah’s spirit as they fought hard to make a comeback. However, despite several attempts at the Shahzan Muda goalmouth, they just could not find the much needed equaliser. In the ninth minute, Andre saw his header off a corner taken by Mohd Nafuzi Zain cleared by the keeper, while in the 11th minute Bobby Gonzales’ header off a cross by Kokhrei Dze Irakli hit the goalpost.

Then a minute later, this time Irakli saw his powerful header blocked by the keeper after receiving a superb cross from Hisamuddin Othman. And in the 25th minute, Bobby missed a sitter when he shot above the crossbar from close range.

In a rare attack, Shahzan Muda earned a freekick from about 30 metres and Wan Azwari Wan Nor was the taker. The stout defender unleashed a powerful shot which Irwan could have punched clear or catch. However, he carelessly blocked the ball and the loose ball found Anthony who eventually headed it into the goalmouth from close range.

At the start of the second half, Irwan was replaced by Harold John while Hardy Charles Parsi came in for his elder sibling Henry. Sabah dominated the half, but again failed to find the net.

Irakli had the first try of the half where his 30-metre effort was palmed away by the keeper for a fruitless corner. And in the 63rd minute, defender Dragic Dalibor put Sabah back into the game when he headed home from a corner taken by Nafuzi. In the 74th minute, Dragic managed to head a Hisamuddin corner, but unfortunately this time, it was disallowed for no apparent reason! With two minutes remaining, Sabah were close to scoring the equaliser. It started from a move by Chow Chee Wing from the left. He centred for Andre, who managed to connect, but unfortunately, the keeper blocked it and the ball went out for a corner.

Rhinos could end up empty-handed

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's 4-1 aggregate loss to Pahang in Tuesday's FA Cup quarter-final second leg match in Likas may see the Rhinos end the season without any silverware.

Going into the match trailing 3-1 from the first leg in Kuantan a fortnight ago, Sabah had no answer to Pahang's import striker Redouane Barkaoui's first half goal which turned out to be winner. The Moroccan's 19th minute strike effectively hammered the nail into the coffin of Sabah's FA Cup dreams this season.

Throughout the 90 minutes, Sabah were virtually outclassed in every department by the far more organised Super League side and if the Rhinos did have a chance of scoring it either went wide or was comfortably saved by Pahang's goalie Mohd Syamsuri Mustaffa.

To be fair to Sabah, playing in slippery conditions and with the pitch far from suitable for football, no thanks to the erratic weather the State is experiencing at the moment also hampered the Rhino's.

In such conditions both teams struggled to string up decent passes and the players too had a tough time manoeuvring the ball. It was no wonder then that both teams for the most part of the match employed a long ball approach with the midfielders pumping crosses into the penalty box.

Even the inclusion of three forward players in the form of Georgian Irakli Kokhreidze, Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer and national player Bobby Gonzales failed to bring the desired effects as support from the midfield was sorely lacking.

Throughout the first half, Pahang was the more superior side and had the lion's share of opportunities in front of goal while Sabah on the other hand had only two, both of which were off target.

In the second half, Sabah did most of the attacking but were denied by their poor finishing as well as Syamsuri, who made a couple of close-range saves, mostly from headers.

Pahang on the other hand were content to run down the clock and relied on their counter attack that almost provided them with a second goal. In the 81st minute Pahang were awarded a penalty after referee K. Ramachandran had adjudged Sabah's Dragic Dalibor to have handled the ball, but luckily for Sabah, Pahang's Tariq El Jannaby ballooned his spot kick sky high.

With their exit from the FA Cup and with the Premier League crown out of reach, Sabah's last hope of a silverware lies in the Malaysia Cup which is expected to kick-off later this year.

Sabah will now turn its attention to their Premier League match against Proton FC on Friday to be played at the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council Stadium and with only three games remaining Sabah's best possible finish is fourth as they are 10 points behind third placed team Kelantan.

The Rhinos currently lie in fourth with 40 points after 21 matches from 12 wins, four draws and five losses.

PRIDE AT STAKE

KOTA KINABALU: Rahman Zakaria insists they have themselves to blame for crashing out of the FA Cup competition on Tuesday night. The Rhinos’ team manager admitted that they failed to pounce on the opportunity given to them which eventually saw Pahang deservedly earning a place in the semi-finals.

“It was a game that we all know we had to win by at least a 2-0 margin. But we failed to do our job. The players tried really hard, but they just could not click when it mattered most.

“It was plain to see that we had better ball possession compared to Pahang, but sadly we didn’t create any goal scoring chances. “Throughout the game, we only managed to create two or three chances, which were unsatisfactory by our standard. “It was a difficult game. We know it was not easy to play on the slippery and muddy pitch, but at the end of the day it was Pahang that coped well under these circumstances.

“But as the saying goes, there is no point crying over spilt milk. We must take it as a lesson taught and try to rectify our mistakes,” said Rahman.

And Rahman said now they must try to focus on the League and as well as the upcoming Malaysia Cup.

“We must focus on our remaining three League games to ensure we finish on top. At the same time, we are also trying to build up ahead of the Malaysia Cup so that we will be in our best form for the prestigious competition,” he added. Malaysia Cup is the only place where they can salvage some pride following their exit from the FA Cup. Already out of the Premier League title race as well the battle for promotion to the Super League, the Rhinos’ naturally turned to the FA Cup to salvage some pride this season.

But this too they failed. Pahang won 4-1 on aggregate in the FA Cup. They won the first leg encounter 3-1 and repeated their winning feat with a slim 1-0 victory at the Likas Stadium. Moroccan hitman Redoane Barkaoui netted the only goal of the night in the 19th minute. The score line could have been higher for Pahang but Tarek Al Janaby shot over the bar from the penalty spot when Mohd Radzi Hussin was fouled for handling the ball inside the box.

In Tuesday night’s other matches, Super League champion Kedah won 10-3 on aggregate against Melaka, Selangor edged Kuala Muda Naza 4-2 on aggregate and Terengganu won 4-2 on aggregate against Felda United FC.

Sabah will resume their Premier League campaign against Proton FC at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya on Friday April 25.

RHINOS CRASH OUT

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah bowed out of the FA Cup after being edged 1-0 by Pahang in the quarter-finals of the return leg at the Likas Stadium last night. The Rhinos were shown the door after losing 4-1 on aggregate which eventually saw Pahang advance into the next stage that is the semi-finals. Pahang won the first leg 3-1 and were the deserved winners despite minor incidents throughout this particular game. Sabah in fact had a better ball possession of the night and proved that they were no easy nut to crack. But the visitors who were better organised especially in the attack, had other ideas

There were not many scoring chances at the slippery Likas Stadium field on Tuesday night due to a heavy downpour earlier. Pahang were slicker in their passing and managed to create two half-chances inside the first 15 minutes of the game. And in the 19th minute they finally drew first blood when striker Redouane Barkaoui defeated Irwan Jamil with a grounder from close range after receiving a superb pass from Tarik El Janaby from the left.

Trailing by a goal down, and 4-1 on aggregate, Sabah upped their tempo and finally had their first chance at Pahang’s goal through Mohd Nafuzi Zain 25-metre attempt. However, it was not good enough to beat the former national custodian Mohd Syamsuri Mustaffa.

At the start of the second half, Sabah brought in Salvester Sindeh for the ineffective Bobby Gonzales. However his presence failed to lift Sabah’s game. But in the 72nd minute, they were presented with their first attempt of the half only to see Dragic Dalibor’s close range header off a free kick taken by Chow Chee Wing land straight into the keeper.

Two minutes later, it was Andre Scotti Ossemer’s turn with another opportunity and again his weak header from inside the six-yard box was saved by Syamsuri. Things could have gone bad to worst for Sabah in the 81st minute when Radzi Hussin was caught for handball inside the penalty box. Fortunately for Sabah, Pahang’s Tarik El Janaby ballooned his spot-kick over the cross bar.

Sabah had a few chances late in the game, but none found the net. With this, Sabah will now have only the Malaysia Cup to look for to end their title drought.

IN WITH A CHANCE

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah may hold the initiative at home but it will be the visiting Pahang team that will be the hot favourites as the visitors have a two-goal cushion after winning the first leg 3-1. But the Rhinos are ready for the return leg of the FA Cup quarter-finals at the Likas Stadium tonight. Rahman Zakaria is refusing to concede defeat, citing that there is another 90 minutes to play to decide a place in the semi-finals. The Rhinos team manager admitted it will certainly be a mammoth task for them to overcome the deficit, but he believes it is not an impossible task to accomplish. “As far as we are concerned nothing is over. We will try our level best to get the better of them this time around,” said Rahman. “Two goals is not a big margin, and I do believe our chances to go into the next round are still wide open. Nevertheless, this will surely be a do-or-die mission, not only for us but also for them as well. “Well, they may be the firm favourites but we are happy to go into the match as the underdogs. “There is no pressure on our part. We have got nothing to lose. So we will go into the game without any pressure whatsoever. The only thing we need to do tomorrow (tonight) is to play our hearts out,” Rahman added. Nevertheless, Rahman reminded his charges not to waste the opportunity to make it into the next round. “We are so close to the final and it would be a great waste if we don’t take this opportunity. Furthermore, we have missed the chance to win honours in the Premier League, so it would be great if we can do it in this competition. Rahman also called on the fans to come in full force to give the team a much needed boost. He said that with good turn out from the fans, it will surely help the team play better. “The presence of the fans will indirectly boost the players’ team spirit.” Rahman also hinted that they will parade their best squad for the clash. “All our foreign players will be in action. Andre (Scotti Ossemer), Kokhrei Dze Irakli and Dragic (Dalibor) will certainly see first team action. “However, on the local front we will still be without Munir (Amran/suspension) as well as Rosdin Wasli (injured), but the rest are available for options. Meaning to say we will be having our best squad for the clash. “As for Jamie (Phoenix), he has been replaced by Andre, so he will have ample time to recuperate from injury,” said Rahman. Both Sabah and Pahang are one-time FA Cup champions. Sabah were crowned champions in 1995 and ironically it was Pahang that they defeated 3-1 in the final. As for Pahang, they lifted the Cup for the first time in 2006. Playing elsewhere tonight, reigning champion Kedah will take on Melaka at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Star. The newly crowned Super League 2007-2008 champs should make the semis as they have a 4-1 advantage after their first leg victory over the struggling Premier League outfit. At the Shah Alam Stadium, Selangor will face high riding Premier League side Kuala Muda Naza. It will be interesting to see if the inexperienced club side can hold their one-goal advantage over an elite team like Selangor. In Cheras, Felda United FC will need a midas touch to overcome the two-goal deficit over Terengganu who won the first leg encounter 3-1. Away goal rules will apply if teams are level on aggregate. Matches will proceed into extra time and then penalty kicks is to take place.

RHINOS MOVE ON

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah moved to fourth spot after securing a 3-1 win over hapless Kuala Lumpur in a Premier League challenge at the Likas Stadium last night.

With Johor Pasir Gudang fumbling in Kuantan, the Rhinos climbed a rung up from fifth on 40 points. Johor Pasir Gudang who were edged 3-2 by Shahzan Muda at the Darul Makmur Stadium despite taking a 1-0 first half lead, dropped to fifth on 39 points. The surprise inclusion of Brazilian Andre Scotti Ossemer seemed to bring some magic into the team as it was he that drew first blood for the homesters. The nippy striker, who was reinstated to replace the injured Englishman Jamie Phoenix, repaid the faith of the management by slotting home from close range in the 28th minute.

In the 33rd minute, Sabah were 2-0 up when stand-in captain Bobby Gonzales beat the offside trap to go one-on-one to beat the keeper Mohd Shahfiz Amri. Bobby coolly shot a grounder from an acute angle getting the better of the on-rushing Kuala Lumpur custodian. Sabah did not stop there as Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli put his name in the score sheet. With five minutes remaining for the first half break, he was presented with a through ball from Chow Chee Wing. And like Bobby, Irakli unleashed a grounder which again defeated the KL shot-stopper Mohd Shahfiz for the third time in the space of 13 minutes.

In the 42nd minute, Azrine Affendy Sa’duddin squandered an opportunity to reduce the deficit for the visitors as his attempt from inside of the box went over the crossbar.

But the fans’ hope of seeing a high scoring night did not materialise in the second half as Sabah failed to produce their first half show. Instead, it was the visiting team that looked much more dangerous. But their consolation came late in the game when Azidan Sarudin unleashed a spectacular shot from just outside the box with eight minutes remaining into regulation time.

The win however was not enough to keep Sabah’s hope of a third-place finish as Kelantan won their battle against Melaka. They picked up maximum points after registering a 3-1 win on the road that eventually helped them keep pace with the top two teams.

KL Plus, despite being held to a two-all draw by Selangor PKNS at the MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya, remained at the top of the standings on better goal average than second-placed Kuala Muda Naza, who edged Felda United 1-0 at the KLFA Stadium in Cheras.

Both are level on 54 points, but Kuala Muda Naza has a game in hand than their rivals. Kelantan are in third on 50 points. Sabah’s next game is at the Likas Stadium on Tuesday when they take on Pahang in the second leg of the FA Cup quarter-finals.

weary Rhinos take on City Boys

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will have to do without four regulars when they take on Kuala Lumpur in a Premier League home tie against Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Midfielder Mohd Nafuzi Zain is the latest player to be in the Rhinos’ casualty list after aggravating an injury in the 2-1 win over Johor Pasir Gudang on Monday.

Englishman Jamie Phoenix and skipper Rosdin Wasli will still be on the sidelines as they are yet to fully recover from their respective injuries. Lanky defender Mohd Munir Amran is not among the options as he is under suspension after collecting a red card in the 1-2 defeat to Kelantan last week.

But despite not having the best squad to face the City Boys, Rhinos chief coach Drago Mamic remains optimistic about their chances. “We got to admit the fact that we will be stronger if all our best players are available for any game. However, things like this do happen, so we have to live with it.

“So my hope is for the players that come in to show that they are as good as those nursing injury or suspension,” Drago said. “On my part, I will try to prepare the best team for the game, and hoping for them to do a good job. It has been a tough season because the fixtures is really hurting us. Compare to our Peninsula counterparts, I think we suffered the most because of the travelling that we have to make.

“Just look at our fixtures the last 14 days. I can understand why they can get injured so easily because there is hardly any time for them to recover.

“The travelling itself is already taking its toll on the players, but I’m glad to have a squad that always tries their level best when ever they are given the opportunity.

And Drago said that as long as the players play to instructions and show their usual gritty spirit, the team’s chances of winning remain high. “I know this team. They have a good fighting spirit and commitment. And I hope they will click as a team because once that happen, our chances (winning) would be higher,” said Drago.

Drago will still have the services of Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli while Dragic Dalibor will also be around at the Rhinos backlines for tonight’s game.

Sabah currently fifth in the standings is already out of contention for promotion to the Super League, and now they are hoping to end their season in fourth placing, the best they could do.

However, they must win their remaining four matches, including tonight’s date with Kuala Lumpur. At the same time, they must hope for Johor Pasir Gudang to fumble somewhere in their remaining matches.

KL Plus lead the 13-team standings on 53 points followed by Kuala Muda Naza on 51. Kelantan is in third on 47 while Johor Pasir Gudang 39 and Sabah 37.

BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah chief coach Drago Mamic said failing to make a top-two finish in the Premier League is a bitter pill to swallow! However, it is not the end of the world either as his young side has a bright future.

The Croatian said it was a pity if the team did not make it into the Super League next season, insisting that they do have the quality to play in the nation’s top flight competition.

On Monday, Sabah ended their three-match barren run by notching a comeback victory over Johor Pasir Gudang. But it proved to be a win too late for the Rhinos, as their dream of getting promoted had ended much earlier on. Nevertheless, it could still prove to be a crucial victory as they now seek to end their season with the best possible finish – at the moment fourth. Coincidentally it is Johor Pasir Gudang that sit on the fourth spot – two points ahead of the Rhinos, who are in fifth on 37 points.

With four matches remaining, there is still an open chance for Sabah to pip Johor Pasir Gudang, provided they win their remaining battles and Johor Pasir Gudang fumble at some stage.

And with the rumour that the FA of Malaysia is likely to expand the Super League next season, that means there might be a back-door entry. And if it turns into reality, then third-placed Kelantan, Johor Pasir Gudang and Sabah could benefit from the changes or expansion. So now it is important for teams like Kelantan, Johor Pasir Gudang and Sabah to try to get the best positions in the standings.

Kelantan can safely say that the third place belongs to them requiring to collect only four points from the possible nine in their remaining three matches. But the same cannot be said for Johor Pasir Gudang, as Sabah do stand a chance to pip them. “I really hope the FA of Malaysia would make a decision and expand the Super League. When you look at the top five teams in the Premier League, I think they are of the same standard as most of the Super League teams.

“You don’t see much difference between these teams (Premier League top five) and the bottom half of the Super League. “For instance, in our case, we played several Super League teams last season and this season in the Malaysia Cup and the FA Cup and we managed to win our battles against most of them,” said Drago.

On their victory over Johor Pasir Gudang, Drago said the team played well and were deserving winners despite missing at least two key players in Englishman Jamie Phoenix (injury) and Mohd Munir Amran (suspension).

“We played well. Despite trailing, they showed great fighting spirit. They have been playing with this spirit and commitment all this while. “Actually, I cannot fault them at all. When we look back, there were so many matches where the results did not reflect the way we played. “On most occasions, they are matches that we lose where we played much better than our opponents. But due to some reasons, such as miserable decisions made by the referees, we lost the games.

“Nevertheless it is (now) more important for us to look ahead instead of thinking about the negative side of our challenge. “We should take it as a motivation to try harder and be a better team so that we won’t be victims of the men in black. The match against Johor Pasir Gudang was delayed for about one and a half hours due to the faulty floodlights at the Tan Sri Dato Hj Hassan Yunos Stadium. Instead of the usual 8.45pm kick-off time, it started at 10.30pm and ended at about 12 midnight.

Nevertheless, the delay seemed to be a blessing in disguise as they fought their way back to win the battle with striker Bobby Gonzales netting twice for the Rhinos.

Osvaldo Morino had put Johor Pasir Gudang into the lead with his 20th minute strike, but Bobby cancelled Johor’s lead in the 51st minute before slotting home the winner in the 59th minute. Sabah’s next game is against Kuala Lumpur at the Likas Stadium on Friday.

TOUGH CALL FOR DRAGO

KOTA KINABALU: Drago Mamic will have to find the much-needed remedy to light up his demoralised squad ahead of the away clash against Johor Pasir Gudang at the Tan Sri Dato Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin tonight.

The Rhinos’ chief coach admitted that the team are at their record low of the season after the 2-1 home defeat to Kelantan that eventually ended their chase for the two automatic slots for promotion into the Super League next season. “I’m very disappointed because of what has happened to the team. It is not only me. The players are very disappointed too because they have been trying really hard,” said Drago, when contacted yesterday. “They are down I need to lift the confidence and morale of the players to be ready for the coming games, including tonight’s battle,” the Croatian added.

Drago said that despite the fact that they have missed the chance for promotion, it has not been a bad season for the squad. He said that in some instances where they lost their battles, they were actually the better team, adding that no team in the league can prove that they are better than the Rhinos.

However, he added there are several factors that contributed to Sabah’s defeats in crucial games. One of them, he said was one-sided refereeing.

Drago said that if the attitude of the referees (against Sabah) did not change, it will be difficult for the Rhinos to gain promotion. “I have been around for quite a while now, and from my observation, I think they did not do it accidentally, but I can say that it is been done intentionally because you don’t make the same kind of mistake again and again even if it is a minor one. “One our part, it hurt us because those small decisions influenced the results of the game,” said Drago. At the same time, Drago said losing key players in crucial games did not help the team at all.

This he said was due to the fact that the team are facing tough fixtures, having to play so many matches in a short period. “For instance, our new signing Kokhrei Dze Irakli had to play a total of five matches in 11 days. Plus the traveling that we did, I think it is just too much for the players because they hardly have had any time to recover,” said Drago.

But tonight, Drago could welcome back skipper Rosdin Wasli into his first team after missing the Rhinos’ last 10 matches. Rosdin was an unused substitute in the defeat against Kelantan and will be hoping to get some matches under his belt. Another player expected to return is attacking midfielder Jamie Phoenix, whose combativeness and skills were sorely missed in the last few games.

With five matches to go, Sabah can get a maximum of 49 points provided that they register victories in all the matches including tonight’s game.

That would surely put them among the top four in the league and if the rumour of the FAM’s plan to expand the Super League next season materialises, it could work in their favour to have another shot at promotion. Sabah are fifth in the 13-team table on 34 points, five behind Johor PG.

KL Plus top the league on 50 points, followed by Kuala Muda Naza on 48 points, while Kelantan trail in third place with 44 points.

AS GOOD AS OVER

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s hopes of claiming one of the two promotion slots into the Super League next season all but vanished after losing narrowly to Kelantan in a Premier League challenge at the Likas Stadium last night.

Ten-man Sabah went down 2-1 with Mouhamadu Moustapha Mane and Mohd Badhri Mohd Radzi netting for the visitors, while second-half substitute Bobby Gonzales scored the consolation goal for the home side. The result has left them with no hope of finishing among the top two teams in the league who will gain automatic promotion to top flight action next season.

Unless the FA of Malaysia changes the format of the M-League, Sabah will remain in the Premier League for a record fourth season. At the moment, to finish their season in third or fourth is already a mammoth task for the Rhinos. With all the top teams winning their respective matches on the night it will be a mountain to climb for them to unseat Kelantan and Johor Pasir Gudang from the third and fourth spots respectively, what more KL Plus and Kuala Muda Naza, who seem to be unshakeable at the top of the standings.

KL Plus, who blanked Melaka 2-0 at the Hang Jebat Stadium, lead the standings on 50 points, while Kuala Muda Naza are closely two points behind, as they too had a victorious night by edging Shahzan Muda 3-2 at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan. The victory allows Kelantan to keep the pace with the top two teams as they sit in third on 44 points, while Johor Pasir Gudang defeated Harimau Muda with an identical scoreline at the Nasional Stadium in Bukit Jalil to stay in fourth on 39 points, followed by Sabah in fifth on 34.

Last night, it was an exciting encounter as both sides went for the offensive right from the start. However, chances of scoring were rare as both sides failed to create anything until the last 15 minutes of the first half with Kelantan looking to have taken the lead in the 32nd minute when Mohd Nizad Ayub was presented with a golden opportunity right in front of the Sabah goalmouth.

But it was fortunate for the homesters as despite having already beaten Sabah’s keeper Irwan Jamil, Mohd Nizad’s close-range header hit the left side of the goalpost and went out of play.

But a minute later in a quick counter attack, Sabah’s Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli found space inside the Kelantan six-yard box but only to shoot straight at the Kelantan keeper Mohd Shahrizan Ismail.

Then in the 43rd minute, there was no stopping Kelantan from taking the lead when Mouhamadu finished off a Mohd Badhri cross with a grounder from inside the box to eventually end the first half with Kelantan leading 1-0.

After the break, Sabah tried to make a comeback, but just found the Kelantan defence marshaled by Jan Necas a hard nut to crack. And things were getting tougher for them when they were forced to play the last 36 minutes of the game with a man lesser after defender Mohd Munir Amran was given the marching orders after he was alleged to have elbowed Mouhamadu in the 54th minute. Earlier on, Munir had received a yellow card, but the second offence was surely a straight red card even if he fouled Mouhamadu unintentionally or otherwise. In this case, the referee Lee Chong Shen got it right.

However, the man in black on the night made far too many errors as most of his minor decisions were against the home side. In the 76th minute, Kelantan extended their lead through a lighting counter attack. This time after being the provider of the first goal, Mohd Badhri put his name on the scoresheet by scoring the second from close range.

Trailing by two goals down, Sabah’s coach made two substitutions by brining in Bobby Gonzalez and Azrul Ejati Damsah to replace Chow Chee Wing and Mohd Nafuzi Zain respectively.

And Bobby managed to reduce the deficit for Sabah in the 80th minute by connecting fellow substitute Hisamuddin Othman who came in for Julamri Muhamad at the start of the second half, cross.

After the goal, Sabah had one or two chances at the Kelantan goalmouth, but none found the net as the match ended in favour of the visitors.

NO ROOM FOR ANY SLIP-UPS

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah take on Kelantan at the Likas Stadium tonight in a Premier League tie that will have a telling factor on their fading promotion hopes. With only six matches to go (for Sabah), there is little room or rather no place for any more slip-ups from the Rhinos. Rahman Zakaria is fully aware that nothing, but only victory will keep their hopes alive.

“We will be going all out and continue our fight no matter how hard or difficult it is going to be. As long as there is a fighting chance, we will go for it because in football you never know what is going to happen,” the Rhinos’ team manager said.

“Furthermore, this is the time for us to rebound back from our two consecutive defeats,” Rahman said, referring to their 3-2 defeat to Kuala Muda Naza in their last Premier League match and the 3-1 defeat to Pahang in the FA Cup quarterfinals first leg encounter on Tuesday. Sabah, who are currently in fifth on 34 points, will go into the match trailing by 13 points off the league leaders KL Plus FC, who have played a game more, and are 11 points behind second-placed Kuala Muda Naza, who occupy the last promotion slot to the Super League.

Kelantan, who currently sit in third spot, are ahead by seven points, but have played a game more, while fourth-placed Johor Pasir Gudang are two points ahead of them.

Rahman hopes the players will not be demoralised by the two defeats, and said that they need to be a little patient. “What is important for us now is to make a quick rebound from these defeats in order to instill confidence and morale in the team. “There are another six matches to go and we must not waste the opportunity,” Rahman said.

For tonight’s game, Sabah will welcome back defender Ahmad Tharmini Saiban from suspension, while Englishman Jamie Phoenix, who missed the Rhinos’ last two matches through injury, is also expected to feature in the first team.

The rest of the players, including Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli, will be available for options. However, skipper Rosdin Wasli is still recuperating from a long-term injury.

And with both the top two teams facing rather easy opponents, there is little chance for Sabah or Kelantan to close the gap on the top teams. However, a victory for Sabah could see them close the gap on Kelantan and they could also pip Johor Pasir Gudang from the fourth spot if the southern team fail to collect points from their encounter against the young Harimau Muda side.

KL Plus face lowly Melaka in an away battle at the Hang Tuah Stadium, while Kuala Muda Naza will take on Shahzan Muda, also away, at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan.

The other Premier League matches tonight will see Felda United taking on Selangor PKNS at the Kuala Lumpur Football Association Stadium in Cheras, while Armed Forces entertain Kuala Lumpur at the MP Selayang Stadium.

SUPER LEAGUE vs PREMIER LEAGUE

KOTA KINABALU: It will be the case of “Super League versus Premier League” when the FA Cup quarterfinals take centre stage in four venues tonight. With the exception of the Melaka versus reigning champions Kedah tie, the remaining three fixtures would see three Super League teams pitted against their Premier League counterparts.

Interestingly, the three Super League outfits – Selangor, Terengganu and Pahang – have six FA Cup titles between them with the Red Giants winning it a record four times, while both Pahang and Terengganu won the Cup once since its interception in 1990.

Sabah are the only team to have won the Cup from the Premier League sides that have made it to the last eight. Besides lifting the crown, Sabah or the Rhinos as they are fondly known as also have three runners-up medals under their belt. Ironically, tonight, the Rhinos will be taking on Pahang – the team they beat 3-1 to lift the crown for the first time ever in 1995 after two failed attempts earlier on – (1993 and 1994 – lost to Kuala Lumpur on both occasions 2-1 and 3-1).

In 1998, Sabah also made it into the final, but Johor shattered their dream of creating history by winning the crown on home soil – they were beaten 1-0 by the visitors at the Likas Stadium. “We are only two steps away from making it to our fifth final. This is our best chance to move on in the competition. I hope the players will not waste the opportunity,” said the Rhinos’ team manager Rahman Zakaria yesterday. “I believe our chief coach Drago Mamic and his coaching staff have a winning strategy for the clash. At the same time, Rahman wants the team to temporarily forget for the moment about what is happening in the Premier League.

“Let us switch our focus on this competition. This is a different ball game, and we must try to gain as much advantage for the return leg. We have our supporters waiting for us, and a good result would surely give us the edge for the return leg,” Rahman said. Sabah marched into the last eight after notching a 4-3 aggregate win over Police, while Pahang booked their quarterfinal ticket by defeating Premier League leaders 2-0 on aggregate.

In the other quarters, Selangor will take on Kuala Muda Naza. Ironically, both teams are sitting in second place in the Super League and Premier League respectively.

The other match will see Terengganu take on Felda United with the odds on Terengganu to march on. The return leg of the quarterfinals will be played on August 22.

DEFENCE DILEMMA

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is faced with a defence dilemma as they go on the road again to take on second-placed Kuala Muda Naza in a must-win battle in a Premier League tie at the Darul Aman Stadium tonight. They will be without Bosnia-Herzegovina central defender Dragic Dalibor, while his partner Ahmad Tharmini Saiban is also doubtful. Dragic is serving his automatic one-match suspension after collecting his third yellow card in the two-all draw against KL Plus FC, while Tharmini was substituted at the half-hour mark due to an injury in the same match.

With Dragic out and Tharmini doubtful, there is no regular central defender left in the team. Skipper Rosdin Wasli, who used to be utilised in central defence in the absence of any of the two, is still recuperating from injury, thus giving the Rhinos’ chief coach Drago Mamic to tinker on his replacement. However, Tharmini was part of the squad that left for Alor Star yesterday, while the return of tough tackling left-back Mohd Munir Amran from suspension is a big relief to the team.

The lanky Munir could be the man that Drago will count on to marshal the Rhinos’ backline alongside Wong Sai Kong or possibly Henry Parsi. He could also drop playmaker Mohd Nafuzi Zain to play in defence or bank on the inexperienced Hardy Charles Parsi.

Another player who made the trip to Kedah is Englishman Jamie Phoenix, who missed the Rhinos’ last game due to injury. New signing Georgian striker Kokhrei Dze Irakli is also in the team. The rest of the players are available for options. “We have to face the reality that this is a game that we cannot afford to lose if we want to keep our promotion hopes alive. “We are in a position where we cannot even afford to end our remaining games in draws, including this tie (against Kuala Muda Naza). “At the moment we are facing what could be described as a do-or-die battle … and it will be the same for the remaining of our fixtures,” the Rhinos’ team manager Rahman Zakaria said.

“It was quite a knock after the draw against KL Plus. But then again I think we are pretty much in the race for promotion. There are another six games left to play … and football is a funny old game and things can happen. “From now on, consistency will be the key to which teams will finish in the top two or three spots at the end of the season. “I firmly believe that teams that show consistency until the final fixtures of the league will have the last laugh,” Rahman said. The Rhinos will be going into the game with an unbeaten record of nine games in the league. Their last defeat in the league competition was the 1-0 home loss to PKNS on January 28.

However, in all competitions, they lost 2-1 to Police in the FA Cup second round, first leg tie late last month. However, they managed to redeem their pride by booking a place in the quarterfinals after notching a 4-3 aggregate victory following their second leg 3-1 victory over the same team. Sabah currently occupy fourth spot in the standings on 34 points – 10 points behind leaders KL Plus. Kuala Muda Naza are two points behind the leaders, while Kelantan on 38 points are third. But both KL Plus and Kelantan have played a game more than Kuala Muda Naza and Sabah.

IS IT WORTH IT?

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is seeking fairness from the men in black as their promotion quest took a slight knock following the two-all draw with leaders KL Plus on Sunday.

They are also urging the FA of Malaysia to seriously look into the low standard of refereeing, which is rampant in the Premier League. Rahman Zakaria in expressing his dissatisfaction towards the standard of refereeing in the League said that they have been the victims of biased and one-sided refereeing far too many times, and they have had enough of it.

The Rhinos’ team manager said if the matter is left unattended, it may force them to think of the unthinkable. He said they have no intention to threaten anyone, but if this thing keeps haunting them, there is no point of competing. “We have been spending millions of ringgit and if we are not fairly treated, we might as well give it a serious thought … whether it is worth to compete in the M-League,” said Rahman.

“We respect FAM and we are not against the FAM. We have been very supportive as far as we can remember. However, as the parent body of football in the country, they need to look into this matter seriously.

“This is not only happening now, but it has been dragging on for years. And we have suffered enough! “We must try to find ways to put this to an end because if this continues it would slow down the development of the sport. At the same time, Rahman also urge the referees’ committee to be more sensible when picking the man to take charge of crucial matches.

“For a big game or important game, they must try to consider an experienced referee to officiate the match. “Last night (Sabah versus KL Plus) the referee was third class. He was not up to the mark. And to make matters worse, he was penalising our players too easily. “Four of our players received bookings. We are not questioning the referee’s decision to book Dragic (Dalibor – unsporting behaviour) or Mohd Nafuzi Zain (tackle from behind), but I don’t know why Salvester Sindeh and Eddie Gapil were shown the yellow card.

“If the duo deserved yellow cards for what they have done, then I think the referee should have shown yellow cards to a few more KL Plus players, who committed far more serious fouls.

“In this case, if reflects the biasness of the referee who intentionally tried to find fault with our players. Rahman said it’s not that they cannot accept defeat, but the action of the referees demoralises the Rhinos, and indirectly affects their chances of winning. Rahman then went on to suggest that FAM consider bringing in neutral referees from outside the country. “That is just one of the things that we could do to sort out this problem,” said Rahman.

After Sunday’s game, the one point gained helped Sabah to claim the fourth spot on 34 points – 10 points behind the leaders – KL Plus, who have played one game more.

Kuala Muda Naza are second on 42 points, followed by Kelantan on 38.

Sabah’s next game is an away battle against Kuala Muda Naza on April 4.
