'Taufan' landa Sabah

ANGIN di bawah bayu bertukar 'taufan'.
Itu yang dialami skuad Sabah menjelang saingan bola sepak Liga Malaysia (Liga M) musim 2009.

Persediaan mereka terencat ekoran beberapa masalah yang mereka hadapi ketika tengah berusaha keras membentuk sebuah pasukan yang mantap untuk menghadapi cabaran musim baru yang dijadualkan membuka tirainya pada Januari depan.

Semuanya gara-gara tindakan beberapa tonggak utama skuad Badak itu yang membuat keputusan untuk mencuba nasib bersama pasukan lain.

Antara yang bakal meninggalkan Sabah ialah bekas pemain kebangsaan, Wong Sai Kong yang disahkan bakal menyarung jersi Sarawak pada musim depan.

Turut meninggalkan skuad Negeri di Bawah Bayu itu ialah penyerang tempatan, Bobby Gonzalez yang telah pun menandatangani kontrak bersama pasukan Brunei DPMM.

"Wong Sai Kong akan menyertai pasukan Sarawak kerana isterinya berasal dari negeri berkenaan," jelas pengurus Sabah, Rahman Zakaria semalam.

"Bobby pula mahu mencuba nasib bersama pasukan lain dan dia bersetuju dengan tawaran yang ditawarkan oleh Brunei."

Sementara itu, Rahman juga mengesahkan bahawa Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Munir Amran, Hishamuddin Othman, Chow Chee Wing dan Mohd. Nafuzi Zain juga akan meninggalkan skuad Sabah.

"Pemergian pemain-pemain ini bermakna Sabah kini hanya memiliki pemain tempatan sahaja.

"Ia juga bermakna pasukan Sabah bakal menggunakan khidmat pemain tempatan sepenuhnya pada kempen Liga Malaysia musim 2009," tambahnya.

Menurut Rahman, Ahmad Tharmini yang juga bekas pertahanan Selangor bakal menyertai pasukan Johor Pasir Gudang ataupun Johor FC.

"Munir dan Chee Wing akan menyarung jersi Felda United sementara Hishamuddin kembali ke Kuala Lumpur dan Nafuzi menyertai pasukan Kelantan.

"Sementara itu, Chan Wing Hong yang sebelum ini dilaporkan bakal menyertai Sabah memutuskan untuk beraksi bersama Brunei."

Dengan ketiadaan beberapa tonggak utama itu, Sabah bakal mempertaruhkan nama-nama seperti Rosdin Wasli, Zainizam Marjan, Mohd. Radzi Hussin, Zulamri Muhammad, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Henry Parsi dan Hardy Charles Parsi pada kempen musim depan.

Wong, Bobby join exodus

KOTA KINABALU: Wong Sai Kong is the latest local import to have left the Rhinos.

The utility player, who had initially expressed his desire to renew his ties with the team, is believed to have had a change of heart! It is understood that the former international is likely to join his former team Sarawak.

“He is likely to join Sarawak because his wife is from there,” a reliable source told the New Sabah Times Sport yesterday.

Wong was seen training with the Rhinos for about two days last week, but since then he has not been seen with the team.

Yesterday, he was also nowhere to be seen at the Rhinos’ training at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex field B in Likas.

The other local imports who have left the team are Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Munir Amran, Hishamuddin Othman, Chow Chee Wing and Mohd Nafuzi Zain.

Bobby Gonzales is also leaving the team. The striker is set to sign for Brunei’s DPMM.

And that is not all as both Salvester Sindeh as well as Eddie Gapil are also looking at the exit door as the duo are expected to be called by their employer – Police for the new season.

These nine players were all regulars for the Rhinos last season.

And now the exodus of players has left the Rhinos with a lot of rebuilding work for the squad for the new season.

Among those that are still sticking to the team are all local lads.

Among them are skipper Rosdin Wasli and Zainizam Marjan, Mohd Radzi Hussin, Zulamri Muhammad, Azrul Ejati Damsah, Henry Parsi, Hardy Charles Parsi, Zuraindey Jumai and the three goalkeepers – Irwan Jamil, Harold John and Mohd Salawi Jasad.

And with the FA of Malaysia decided to do away with the foreign players for the new season, it is very likely that Sabah is going to parade an all-local side.

At the moment, there are several ex-Rhinos and ex-junior Rhinos trying to make it into the team.

Among them are Rezuan Aman Khan, Gasili Pengalot, Mafry Ballang, Restu Emat and Vun Ket Ming @ Billyton to name a few.

The coach-less Rhinos are currently training under the watchful eyes of assistant coach Burhan Ajui.

Meanwhile, the Sabah FA had postponed its team management meeting scheduled for yesterday.

Its executive secretary Harry Baking said that they have put off the meeting due to unforeseen circumstances.

He pointed out that the new date for the meeting will be Monday.

Harry said the hiring of a new chief coach will be among the issues to be discussed during the meeting.

On the hunt for a coach

KOTA KINABALU: The appointment of the Rhinos’ head coach will top the agenda when the Sabah FA holds its team management committee meeting on Thursday.

The afternoon showdown is also likely to zero in on how to prepare the team for the new season which is expected to kick off on early January 2009.

Speaking to the New Sabah Times Sports yesterday, Rahman Zakaria said several other issues such as hiring of new players will be up for discussion.

“A lot will be discussed during the meeting. But I think the hiring of the new coach will be the main thing. The team cannot be left without a coach because we really need to get cracking from now on,” the Rhinos team manager said.

The Rhinos are currently coach-less after the FA decided not to renew the contract of Croatian coach Drago Mamic, whose contracts ends at the end of last season.

Former player, Burhan Ajui, who was the assistant to Drago, is currently in charge of the team.


Rahman, who is also the FA Supreme Council member, revealed that so far they have only received one application for the Rhinos’ hot seat and it is from a local coach, but he declined to give any names.

“The doors are still open and we welcome coaches who have yet to submit their applications,” said Rahman.

The New Sabah Times Sports understands that only four local coaches have the criteria to run the State team. Among them are Justin Ganai, Kelly Tham, Stanley Chew and Mohd Asyraaf Fung Abdullah.

Rahman also revealed that several of last year’s squad has left the team.


He said, Chow Chee Wing, Ahmad Tharmini Saiban, Munir Imran and Hishamuddin Othman will not don the Rhinos colours next season.

Chow Chee Wing and Munir Imran are believed to have signed for Felda United while Hishamuddin with Kuala Lumpur and Tharmini Johor.

In view of the exodus, Rahman said they will be looking for several players especially defenders and strikers for the new season.

“We need a player or a defender who can lead the team at the backline. At the same time, we are also looking for a prolific striker.

“Our first choice of course will be a local Sabahan, but if we cannot find a suitable local candidate, I am afraid we will have to look elsewhere,” he said.

Although players have left or will leave the team, the good news is that there are several ex-players making a return to the team.

Mafry Balang and Gasili Pengalot joined the team in training since late last month.

Bobby, Wing Hong to DPMM

Ketua pasukan kebangsaan Mohd Shukor Adan akan mewakili pasukan Brunei Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota (Brunei DPMM) pada saingan bola sepak Liga Super musim depan.

Perkara itu disahkan oleh pengurus pasukan Brunei DPMM, Pengiran Muhd Waslimin Pengiran Abdul Momin kepada Bernama setelah kata sepakat dicapai antara kedua-dua pihak pada awal bulan ini.

"Malah kita juga telah menandatangani dua bekas pemain pasukan Malaysia iaitu Bobby Gonzalez dari Sabah dan pemain pertahanan, Chan Wing Hoong yang bermain untuk Perak musim lepas," katanya.

"Shukor akan menandatangani kontrak dengan Brunei DPMM dalam masa terdekat setelah selesai tugasannya dengan skuad kebangsaan Malaysia di Myanmar," katanya, Selasa.


Muhd Waslimin memberitahu pemilihan Shukor,yang menjadi buruan mereka sejak bulan lepas, adalah berdasarkan pengalaman dan mutu permainan yang ditunjukkan oleh pemain berusia 29 tahun itu.


Sebelum ini, pasukan Brunei DPMM cuba memikat pemain kebangsaan Indra Putra Mahayuddin dengan tawaran gaji yang lumayan tetapi bekas pemain Selangor itu memilih untuk menyarung jersi Kelantan.

Muhd Waslimin berkata pasukannya itu meletakkan sasaran lima tempat teratas pada musim depan yang bermula Januari ini selepas hanya menduduki tangga ke-10 daripada 13 pasukan musim lalu.

Pasukan negara kini menyertai Kejohanan Piala Cabaran Grand Royal Ketiga di Yangon, Myanmar, mulai hari ini hingga 21 Nov ini.

Skuad bimbingan B. Sathianathan itu diletakkan dalam Kumpulan A bersama Ulsa Hondai Club dari Korea Selatan dan skuad bawah 22 tahun Vietnam manakala Myanmar, Indonesia dan Bangladesh membarisi Kumpulan B.

Kejohanan itu merupakan persiapan Malaysia menjelang Piala Suzuki AFF di Bangkok, Thailand dan Jakarta, Indonesia, dari 5 hingga 28 Dis ini.

Scott played for the Socceroos on 18 occassions. He played in the old Australian NSL for St. George, Sydney Olympic, Apia & Wollongong. In 1992/93 he played for English 1st Division Club Walsall. In 1994 he moved to Malaysia where he played for Sabah until 1997 & in 1998 he joined Negeri Sembilan. In 1999 he joined Northern Spirit in their inaugural year but injury forced him to prematurely retire without playing a single game for them.

He moved back to Sabah in 2000. Scott currently has business interest in KK, Sandakan & Keningau Futsal Arenas & is the Managing Director of Borneo Sports & Adventure Holidays.

>Best moments with Rhinos was winning League in 96

>Best friends in the team were Ong Kim Swee, Bobby Chua, Abdullah Adi, Yap Wai Loon & Milomir

7.What do you think about Matlan Marjan? Are you still in contact with him?
>I think Matlan Marjan was a incredible talent & its a shame he made the choices he did.I see him occassionally around town

>No i dont have PR but i may apply for it next year-saya cekap sikit malayu-saya faham banyak

9.I heard that you became a businessmen after retiring from football. Can you tell me about your business?
>I have 2 businesses, a/KK Futsal Arena b/Borneo Sports & Adventure Holidays Futsal has been running for 5 years now. Borneo Sports started last year & is based on sports tourism which is something i love doing & am very passionate about

10.What do yo think about the rhinos now?What do you think they need to be a strong team like you , Matlan , Khairul`s era.
>I feel the Rhinos desperately need to gain promotion to Division 1 as soon as possible.The players need to play with their heart on their sleeve & give blood for the team-giving 100% is not enough-they need to go the extra yard.Only then will the team achieve success & the fans will return to Likas Stadium.

11.Don't you want to coach the rhinos in the future?i really sure that all the fans will full up the stadium every match if you take over the seat.
> I am interested in coaching the team.However,i need to obtain my full coaching badge before this is impossible.I always said i dont want to rely on football for my livelihood & therefore will be putting all my energies into my sports tourism business for next 2 years. After that i would definetely be interested in coaching the State Team & helping the team achieve success.

No local applicants for Rhinos’ hot seat yet

KOTA KINABALU: No local coaches seem to be interested in taking up the Rhinos’ hot seat!

So far none have submitted any application to the Sabah FA.

When contacted the FA Executive Secretary Harry Baking confirmed that they have not received any resume from any local coaches.

This may prompt the FA to look elsewhere for the man to lead the Rhinos for the new M-League season that is expected to kick off sometime in January next year.

Nevertheless, the FA is still not giving up in finding the suitable local man for the job.

“We have not set any deadline (for them to submit their entries). But in case that we do not receive any application within the next one or two weeks, then we have no choice but to open our door to local coaches from the Peninsula,” said Harry.

“As we all know, the new season kicks off in about two months or so. So we want to get cracking and preparing the team so that they will be ready when the new season starts.“In fact there is not much time left for us, so I really hope those local coaches out there, who think that they are the man for the job, submit their applications as soon as possible.

“We are aware that there are a few of them who have the criteria and qualification to manage a Premier League team. But we are not approaching anyone of them (local coaches) because we want to give them equal chances to be considered for the job.

“This is also to show that a Sabahan is our top priority as far as hiring a new coach is concerned and we hope we will find the suitable candidate,” said Harry.

“We are giving our local coaches a chance to play a role in the development of the sport in the State,” he added.

The candidate Harry pointed out must meet their criteria and requirements which among others must possess a full licence – a FA of Malaysia Licence A holder.

The Rhinos’ hot seat was left vacant after the FA decided not to renew the contract of its former coach Croatian Drago Mamic, who left the State at the end of last season’s campaign.

The Rhinos finished fourth in the Premier League (last season) behind Kuala Muda Naza of Kedah, KL Plus and Kelantan.

Kuala Muda and KL Plus have thus been promoted to the Super League following their success story in the Premier League last season.

After hiring foreign coaches for the last few seasons with the hope of getting the Rhinos out of the lower division, the FA has now decided to give a local Sabahan coach a chance to guide the Rhinos back into the country’s top league – the Super League.

Among the foreign coaches to have coached the Rhinos the last few seasons are Portuguese Jose Garrido, Englishman Peter Butler and Drago. Portuguese Jose Luis also had a short stint taking charge of the team.

The local coaches who hold the FA of Malaysia Licence A coaching certificate are former coaches, Justin Ganai, Kelly Tham as well as Stanley Chew, while Mohd Asyraaf Fung Abdullah is the latest man to have earned the FAM’s Licence A coaching certificate.

The Rhinos started their preparations yesterday under the watchful eyes of its former player Burhan Ajui.

Burhan when met over the weekend said that he is concentrating on the fitness of the players for the next one week or so because of the unavailability of a training field.

Chan Wing Hoong is one of the longest serving players currently on Perak's squad. His first spell with the side was between 1998 and 2005.

Before the 2006 season began, Wing Hoong, along with his team mate K. Nanthakumar, left Perak following a salary dispute with team management.

Both Wing Hoong and Nanthakumar then joined Selangor MPPJ,which was then dubbed the 'Chelsea of Malaysia' and reformed their defensive partnership there. However, following the withdrawal of MPPJ for the 2007 season, both Wing Hoong and Nanthakumar were brought back to Perak. By this time, a new management team had taken over and were practicing a policy of recruiting Perak-born players .

Wing Hoong is a first team regular for the team. He is an active member of the national side and participated in 2002 Tiger Cup, 2006 Merdeka Tournament and the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship.
